The Big No No to paying overtime...

So today I thought to myself 'I've had enough of coming back 30 or 40 mins late and not being paid for it, I'm gonna say to the manager I don't think i'll be able to finish on time today, can I book 30 mins overtime and I'll get it all done plus my lapse no problem'.

So I did this and just got a blank, confused look and a swift NO response. I then said 'OK what should I do cut off if i can't finish? I'm quite happy to stay on provided I'm being paid for it, I'm not working for free anymore.'

Manager then said, "Just leave your summer duty"

Lol dear oh dear how tight are the royal mail??? they would rather delay peoples mail then pay me an extra half hour to get it all done!!! not only that its more mail ive gotta take tomorrow. thats if i have time!!!

funny how they was quite happy me coming back late with it all done FOR FREE! now I want paying its a no no!

yeah im still quite new so didnt wanna make waves over 15 min, 20 mins here and there. but now im like well no actually im busting my arse off for free, which isnt right. plus also ive noticed not everyone is completing the summer duties which made me think screw this...

You reply that YOU can't do it and but are more than willing for your manager to test you for a day to witness why. Also, say that you are willing to undergo any training that will improve your performance. Then see what he says!

Understand that as a newbie you are not sure of what;s what. You should have had help.

But, of course the usual suspects of selfish Posties really don't f*cking care about anyone but themselves.

Understand that as a newbie you are not sure of what;s what. You should have had help.

the manager didnt kick up too much of a stink, just said dont do the lapsing. think he prob knows now that im not gonna work for free. i happily made the offer of giving up half an hour of my time to complete all, aslong as im paid. which is fair and correct. on light days its not a problem to complete but today i knew it was gonna be a heavy one. been doing it long enough now to atleast know my own capabilities. which aren't robotic like lol!

Constant problem Nerradc, trying to get Hassle Free OT. Quite strange when we've actually had lots of Posties who were happy with their "Contracted Hours" and only wanted the 4 hours work a day. What happened? The work kept piling up and they kept getting pressurised to do more, then they Jack because they didn't want the extra work.

At the same time the Manger is Bullying other PT Posties who want more work, but only have 22.5 hr contracts, and telling them, "You'll have to stop claiming so much OT, I'm getting grief from my Boss, you should only be working your contacted hours"! Make your Bloody Minds Up for God's sake.

Probably more to do with a "Clash of Personalities", strange how some people seem to be able to book endless OT without any come-back isn't is?

well i got a glimpse of the OT sheet and there were quite a few people on it...some regular every week. it dont bother me too much, aslong as they know i wont work for free. no pay. no overtime. i dont take the mick. i work hard to get my job done but if im gonna struggle id rather be honest and say so. i've never cut off since ive been there. they've just renewed my contract so that must say something. in fairness he wasnt funny about. i was more surprised they was happy to not get the lapse done rather than pay me half hour OT.

Actually - the tool that managers can use to check performance is generous on the side of Posties, to the point that our managers gave up using it. I believe they only used it 3 or 4 times, I know at one point they actually counted the mail in the frame and the actual figures was around 10-15% lower than the figures given by the software.

AFAIK that tool is now obsolete anyway, and there is no current agreed method of testing performance. There isn't in our office anyway. There aren't many that cut off, but the ones that do get no hassle.
