MODERNISATION UGH ?
In the 5 years ive worked for royal mail modernisation seems to have touched every part of the business except one and to me the most important one. WHEN ARE THEY GOING TO BRING MANAGEMENT INTO THE 21ST CENTURY. ive worked in various sectors over the years at different levels and when i started with royal mail it was like i had stepped back in time. THE STRUCTURE NEEDS TO CHANGE , THE MANAGERS NEED TO CHANGE , AND WE NEED LESS OF THEM , THEY ARE STILL CLASSED AS A OVERHEAD I ASSUME. in my time here so far i have not met a good one and if i did it wouldnt matter because they wouldnt be allowed to manage, our office has 5 or 6 [7 if you count the cwu rep] why so many . HAS THERE EVER BEEN ANY ATTEMPT TO MODERNISE MANEGEMENT AND THE TOOLS THEY USE if so what and when ?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

We've got one decent manager in 6. And they're brain washing him bit by bit in the RM ways of man-management.
We've seen so many managers here over the years and I can count the decent ones on the fingers of one hand with digits to spare.

Re: MODERNISATION UGH ?
According to Royal Mail, there is less mail, and fewer members of the workforce, so how come there haven't been proportionate cuts in management?
Nothing to do with this company existing as a gravy train for a certain clique is it.....?

Re: MODERNISATION UGH ?
In the time i've worked in a MC there are only 3 managers left who were managers when I started - 1 on each shift. 2 are good old fashioned no nonsense, common sense managers the 3rd is so bad it beggars belief. 1 shift manager wasn't even in the business when I started, another was a part time postman and the third was in admin. I must have seen at least 50 managers come and go and there wasn't and still isn't a good one between them. Any that showed any promise had their legs cut off at the waist in order to toe the company line.
Royal Fail will never get anybetter until someone upstairs has the balls to change the system.

Re: MODERNISATION UGH ?
Although the DOM and Line Manager that we have at the moment are pretty decent, they are working under pressure from RM the same as everyone else - and that gives them little room for flexibility in dealing with OUR needs, but in my experience they use a lot more common sense and fairness than most managers I have met in this business over the last 16 years.
That aside, the management of RM at every level and in all it's aspects is antiquated and out of touch in this business and needs to be dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age. They do not treat a good workforce as an asset to be protected and supported but continually ridicule and persecute it to cover their own shortcomings. Our hard fought-for terms and conditions are abused and treated with contempt because they are seen as a dangerous "cost" to the company, when all the time the real hemorrhage of revenue is in areas that are a legislative issue for the Government, Postcomm and a new CEO who has to have the balls to tell her board of directors to bring about change for the better - for all of us !!!
Jaw jaw is better than war war - but make no mistake my friends, we are being led to desperate measures by blind leaders and a war of change will come if there is not some hard talking soon ....... our biggest problem from the workforces point of view is "Is the CWU up to it?"

Re: MODERNISATION UGH ?
When they got rid of those 1700 middle managers late last year and early this year it seems to have had no impact on the business at all. In fact overall hasn't Royal Mail said they've reached all their targets recently. All of those managers earned over £40000 for years on end, but if there was no impact, then what was the important work that they did that made them so valuable ? £40000 * 1700 = £68,000,000 per year. As for the junior managers we have had two admin, two earlies and two night managers take vr so far. This is nothing really given their numbers. Rep told me the ratio is one manager to 20 staff but at certain times of day we have one to 9. With the whole modernisation going on Moya Greene is afraid of taking on the junior managers, the job of moving on to what comes next after 4000 of them have left being to big a challenge for her.

I think the EVRs should be offered to delivery posties before managers. , then any deliveries could be taken over by managers who tell us on a daily basis that the work can easily be done in time blah blah blah

Re: MODERNISATION UGH ?
I must agree with the posts about managers. We have a dom and assistant dom who work against each other, one knows nowt and the other doesn't want to know, both have long service at RM.The dom is bullied by his boss so the office is clowned on.The area union rep is in RM's pocket and only looking after his own backside. We have to start at 7, other offices in same postcode start earlier, are we been disciminated against because our managers have no balls?
