what time for breaks

Post by hans solo »

been told by mgmt we might have to take 20 min break at 8.30 am due to wsm mail coming of machines late and then take our other 20 min break out on deliv or at end of shift.
we start at 6am
can this be forced on us i would have thought this breaks h/s guidlines
and govmt meal break directives :no no
at present i have 40 min break 1 hr into deliv when my good lady usually has something cooked for me so rm would also be depriving me of having hot food
anyone know where as an office we would stand on this as things are getting a wee bit angry shall we say

Ignoring the fact where 'you' have yours, what is the norm in the office.

They might get away with the 20minute break at 8:30 as a jobsworth might be able to argue that it is towards the middle of the working day. Although I think its worth fighting.

However, the cannot I think make you take the rest of the break at the end of the shift. They can enforce it at a certain time, as long as it is somewhere in the middle of the working day. Howeverthe waters may be muddied a bit as we get a paid break of 40 mminutes when in emplyment law it does not have to be paid and the minimum break if expected to work 6 hours or more is only 20 minutes.

This is one thing that the CWU needs to take up. Are we covered by the break time legislation for the whole break, or just 20 minutes of it. At the moment the WF says we can have 2 x 20minute breaks but it does not say when they should be taken or if we can voluntarily add them onto the end of the shift as some do, or even if its okay for managers to enforce it that way. :hmmmm

the way forward and previous agreements also state we can take full 40 min break
also states we can still have 10 min grace tea break where time allows outwith meal relief
now if we are waiting on mail time must allow
ps i dont think 20 min is a proper break before going out on a delivery of 3.5 -4 hrs

Scheduling the breaks should have been part of the revision.
If you don't like them don't accept them.
If they are changing them from what was agreed ....disagree. :whistle

Thing is with meal breaks reps can be caught between a rock and a hard place.

For instance if everyone was sensible, including managers, then they should be able to choose where and when to take their breaks. If they want to take it before the outside part of the duty then thats fine, or even half. But it should also be acceptable if members choose to have the break during the outside part. It seems eminently sensible to spilt the physical side in half rather than have a break after the less demanding part of the day.

The problem is people adding their break on the end of the working day make it look too management as though they have time to spare, when they don't. In my own opinion I think people should not take breaks at the end of the day as it does not allow you to refuel and re-energise but we are all adults and we should make the choice ourselves.

The issue of meal breaks seems in a nut shell to outline the endemic problems in the relationships between managers and postal grades. They think we are trying to do one over on them and don't trust us. We think they use meal breaks as a controlling tool rather than as a welfare/H&s issue.

I think the problem in hans solo's office is they have introduced walk sequenced mail without putting in place a wsm revision - mainly to avoid paying the £800 that goes with it.
They need to enforce the break at a certain time or the posties will be sitting around with nothing to do.
Instead of doing the decent thing they are offering £200 to move to a later start. The unit reps and area reps aren't buying in to the offer.
What the Divisional reps will agree to is anyone's guess.
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

There is no other sensible way around it.
What the Divisional rep thinks is unimportant.

But along with the wsm revision goes the £800, the 39hr week (and a 2.5% pay rise for p/t staff) and the improved attendance patterns to offset the longer Saturdays.
None of this is currently under discussion.
There will have to be a revision but the longer they can put it off the happier they will be.
And then of course we have the "new" version of P&L using pouch boxes......... :cuppa
