I have misplaced/lost a special delivery, had it in my bag but when i went to get it just could not find it :S, it was a letter so im hoping nothing of high value, question is will i be sacked for this?

Depends on your track record to be honest.

If its your first time and your a hard worker that does plenty of docket you may get a slapped wrist. If your a "rabble rouser" or have a history then it may go official.

Will you be sacked - it is a possibility so don't ignore it, but its not very probable, a 2 year serious warning or suspended dismissal would be the most I would expect in most cases.

Personally I would own up to what I did.
If they find out and want to speak to you later then if you haven't come clean you look incompetent and dishonest.
If you have made a genuine mistake, why not admit to that.
And what will the records for that SD show? By keeping quiet you may be dragging someone else into this to hide your mistake.

Surely you keep specials in the pocket at the front of the bag, then that can't happen.

I've heard that an equal weighting is put on the customer reaction i.e. if theres no or only a mild complaint then that would help towards a warning.... if on the other hand it was say a cheque for a large amount or other item of value OR had specific need to be somewhere by a specific time AND the customer is a large RM customer or the media is involved etc then it could very tell lead to a sacking.

I've had a woman chase me up the street with an open SD that I delivered to the right number wrong road (I'd only been a postie for about 6 weeks!) She was fine and apologised for opening it and the person that should have got it was "fine, these things happen... don't want you losing your job or anything" Now I'm completely anal when it comes to SD's

I hate SD's. I do em first thing b4 any delivery and whip back to the office with em if I can't get rid.
Doms wet their pants if they go missin', infact a dom once said to me he didn't give a shite about lost mail or packets, just specials.

Ask around your office and see if anyone else has ever lost a Special - should give you an idea of what the likely disciplinary action will be.

In my experience a lot of it, as previously said, comes down to the customers reaction. I've done it myself in the past - took a SD out and when I've got to the end of my round and noticed a SD I'd left a P739 for wasn't in my bag

Walked back to the house where it was for keeping my eyes peeled but couldn't see it. The only option I had was head back to the office and face the music. Got there and mentioned it to one of the PHG's (showing my age here - this is back when your line manager was a JV and a PHG could bollock you!)

Luckily it was a kindly PHG and he told me to jump in a van with him and we had a drive round my walk. Got back to the street it was addressed to and the customer was just pulling into his house. I jumped out to tell him what had happened and asked if I'd pushed it through by accident. Turned out I had and the customer was cool about it - It was tickets for Liverpool vs Man Utd the day after, he was just bothered about getting them! He signed my card and the managers never found out

Another one was a Recorded that I'd pushed through by accident with the P739 (Many, many years later - I don't make a habit of it). It was a business address and when I got back I realised what I'd done. Told my manager and he said OK long as that's whats happened and the customer's fine with it. Customer came into the office later on with the P739 claiming there wasn't a recorded with it. Got hauled into the office and told them I'm 99% sure I stuck it through - even described the envelope.

The manager (to his credit) chose to believe me and said he'd get onto the customer and let him know how serious the matter was. I sat in the office with him while he rang and the customer denied it. The manager then told him that there's a good chance that it may be a matter for police involvement incase the postie had stolen it (he winked at me as he said this). All of a sudden the customer noticed the envelope in the bin at the side of his desk and decided that it didn't really matter!

I got lucky - this is a customer who I'd done favours for (unofficial keepsafes, redirecting while his firm was being refurbished, nipping back with packets when he was opening late etc) and he still tried to shaft me if he thought he might have got £25 compo or whatever recordeds are worth.

You will only get into trouble if the person who has sent the Special, OR the person who received it makes a complaint because of none receipt. The chances are you did indeed post it by mistake. I personally would say noting until something is said.
