My post bike broke!

Post by da'bunny »

For about a week it had seemed like i had a buckled wheel, but i hadn't got round to checking ( i know i should have), any way i pumped up my tyres to see if that would improve the ride but it didn't and so when i got to my first delivery point today i checked the wheel over and nothing was wrong with it, then i noticed this  The frame has cracked! This actually happened to a post bike i had previously many years ago, I'm not overweight either so it hasn't cracked due to the stress of me sitting on it lol......

Anyone else seen this happen or experienced any thing simmillar?

That's not my leg either btw!

Yes seen it before when I was bike mechanic. Quite simply the seat has been put higher than the Mark on the stem and it puts stress on mailstars frame. It's in the manual about it as well.

Be lucky that you HAVE a bike

Thats not a mailstar its a ?? i think its about 11 years old if the date on it is correct!
I was not injured at all, dont know how long it had been like it, it wasn't that noticeable, it was still in line with the rest of the bike but my work mate pulled it out to make it more noticeable in the pic!

This was always going to happen and will increase because cycle safety has been cast aside. The onus was placed on the cycle mechanics to judge if a cycle was roadworthy beyond its scheduled 7 year lifespan which was a ridiculous state of affairs because there is no way you can visiually check if the internal framework is in a healthy state. There must be bikes in service that are long overdue for the knackers yard and could quite easily cause a serious injury. There was also a reluctance to provide spares and support in the latter stages. If cycles are to continue in service then it should be made quite clear by the CWU that they must be serviced as per the schedule for older cycles and a that they must be replaced as before.

Exactly, you make good points.

We are using park and loop in our DO yet some cycles are required for certain routes.

Our bike repair man now does full deliveries and is rarely given time to service or repair 'said' bikes.

Just one of those things that slips under the radar until something dire happens.

Yes you're right I wasn't looking but the seat stem is still at fault. Also the lack of servicing as the other post says 7 years was cut cut cut and eventually got rid off in my office. All bits like Tyres, brake levers etc when ordered were questioned by the Dom until only 1 or 2 bits were allowed as stock. Really great when say three bikes that needed new Tyres at the same time, one bike was then out of service until a order was authorised.I came off the servicing as they wanted you to do it in your own time. The person who took over didn't even have the rm training(2 days) for the bikes. No wonder they went downhill.

I was a cycle mechanic but was only allowed time at the end as ad hoc or on overtime. When I took over we had 52 cycles, many of which had reached beyond their useful life, we now have none. Which is a good thing in my opinion, because unless someone is diligently checking roadworthiness and signing off each and every time a repair is made and the cycle life history is maintained then they shouldn't be allowed on delivery on the grounds of health and safety. Some people would use the cycle in a very poor state rather than report a fault and try to maintain it themselves. H&S should take a serious look at this issue.

Still happens. We haven't had P&L introduced yet (very soon though) and some wallies still ride bikes with serious faults rather than tell me.

The record number of broken spokes in a rear wheel is currently SEVEN !!

Thing is, it's always the same people that seem to wreck their bikes. Others go from service to service with no probs.
