You'll have to forgive me & very new to posting anything here, however I am an avid reader of most of the posts on this forum so you could call me a lurker (if I've got that right). I must say without the information gained from this site not only would it make the job 100 times harder but also impossible to to respond to the idiot managers that RM like to employ!!!
The only saving grace in gaining knowledge from this site is the reassurance I'm not alone.
Anyway now to my question.....
TRAINING BUDGET
Our office has currently taken on quite a few newbies which I understand comes with a training allocation.
When RM takes on a newbie what ever the contract the initial budget for them comes not from the 'office budget'(OB) but the 'training budget' (TB) that is resourced from Sheffield (please someone correct me if I am wrong).
As most of us are aware the newbies are not normally aware of the O/T procedures eg unaware of being able to claim or just bulls$*ted by these wonderfully managers as to why they cannot claim.
Therefore when O/T is logged by say a F/T or P/T would the managers/doms use the allocated budget from the TB rather than the OB therefore fiddlings the figures?
I would be grateful if someone could explain the time span regarding how long the training budget can be used for & would this also be (not all the time) why some of us don't get paid our O/T some weeks or at least until we complain that we haven't had it therefore enabling the managers/dom to pay us using the TB.

Re: Training budget & paying overtime
there is not a seperate budget for training of new starts, basically your office has an annual budget made up of various elements, pressure ot,abs ot and tranining to name a few, what you dom is doing is hiding the pressure ot under training, our office for example has a budget each week roughly for 7 hours pressure, 6 hours abscence and 2 hours training (we are a small do of 13 staff), so if this week we are claiming 8 hours pressure the dom will often put that through as 7 hours pressure and 1 hour training, reason being so he isnt flagged up by the dsm for going over his pressure ot budget for this week, the night caller wrote:You'll have to forgive me & very new to posting anything here, however I am an avid reader of most of the posts on this forum so you could call me a lurker (if I've got that right). Managers will often put through the ot under various different reasons so as not to get pulled up, the system is really a bit silly as its his total budget and he should be able to allocate that as he sees fit ie needs 10hrs pressure some weeks and no training and 10 hrs training another with no pressure, he should only be pulled up if he is going over his weekly budget
the reason he is not paying your ot is he has no where to hide it that week without getting asked to explain it, so he is putting it off to next week in the hope that there will be some spare next week to hide it or you forget to bug him about it

Re: Training budget & paying overtime
So if you are saying that the overall budget is made up of elements which I can understand how would the 'training element' be decided for new recruits? after all who determines the allocation of new entrance which I believe is not the dom they can say how many they need but that doesn't mean they'll get them.
Our dom was trying to say we were under budget by 9K which if that was the case why then would we have a problem with OT payments.
Just very curious because it seems strange the amount of new recruits & how well the office appears to be performing on paper.
I suppose you can rob peter to pay paul but for how long

Re: Training budget & paying overtime
the elements are set at the start of the year at sector level and just basically spread over the year, he will probably get a budget of 300hrs of traning for the year and that is then spread over the year rather than being used in lumps when its actually needed, its daft but thats the way it worksthe night caller wrote:So if you are saying that the overall budget is made up of elements which I can understand how would the 'training element' be decided for new recruits? after all who determines the allocation of new entrance which I believe is not the dom they can say how many they need but that doesn't mean they'll get them.

even though he is 9k under so far for the year if he goes over his weekly budget he still will need to justify it to the area manager which he probably doesnt want to do thats where the problem lies not anything to do with which part of the budget things are coming from
you can rob peter to pay paul all year long and it doesnt get questioned, the only time it get flagged up is if your over your total weekly budget

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Training budget & paying overtime
The reason I am curious is because we've just started P&L & I've lost my duty due to it being 1 of the first to be changed (not fully implemented at the office yet doing it in phases) I'm being move from pillar to post & being told that if my walk is prep I have no reason to cut off (laugh a minute these managers).
Up until a week ago claiming O/T wasn't a great issue but I must admit I've been saying my contract says 22.5 hrs it doesn't stipulate start & finish time which given that managers don't have many brain cells seems to throw them. I should imagine the answer in their rule book hasn't been written to that one so I claim 30 mins on mon tues & sat & 1hr wed thurs & fri. This was what the dom said p/t could claim. I then work my 4hrs & what ever I go over I claim the other end. This has never been a problem now all of a sudden it is. Told by manager that I can't claim both ends my response Ok I'll work my contracted hrs which he didn't like.
Plus having read this in another thread,
[Not only is your lino lying about the above, but they (should) know full well that overtime for newcomers and when the whole office are learning new walks after a resign, overtime (when you are happy to do it) is classed as "training" on the pressure overtime sheet, which I believe is covered by Sheffield and not the depot.]
Makes me wonder if the training budget is drying up.
I love the information about training & new recuits had the 1 day training 1day shadowing & 1 day assisting & then out on my own.
I was told by one manager that I was slow & rubbish so I guess I've got nothing to lose
