Should we lock gates ?

I always attempt to close a gate but really a gate should be slightly angled to close and latch itself but if they have bolts not latches are we required by contract to lock them ?

Yes, leave them the way you find them - there should be time built into Pegasus to allow for it

People usually complain if gates are not shut especially when they got difficult gate to shut quickly. I am paid to deliver the post not to shut your gate.

I hate gates especially when its raining, soggy rotten wood, you end up getting the slime off them under your nails. Why are the British so bloody obsessed with gates

On my days off one of the lads that covers my walk must kick gates in because the next day I am on it's sooo much easier with no gates or latches & even fences too....
it's wrong but it makes my week easier

Don't you just love it when you manage to undo the old piece of rope that's holding it closed, Force the gate open by brute strength,and in the meantime it's fallen off one of it's rusted hinges! Once you've delivered the mail you can't manage to shut the Rotten piece of crap! And then some Senile Old Git comes out and has a go at you because you've left his gate open!

why cant we enact a law like the U.S or Australia where postboxes are at the start of a driveway our job would be so much easier then, less earache from customers, only knocking on doors to deliver packets, pegasus might be acurate for once, and Royal mail could become more efficient. Ah i forgot management dont like efficientcy in delivery

Not a good idea, especially on some estates I deliver to the mail wouldn't last 2 minutes.

good point Donut i forget sometimes i deliver to a decent area with nice people who appeciate posties efforts and there are others who dont, but maybe theres an idea for dragons den or even a money making idea for Royal Mail super secure postbox that can be placed at the start of a driveway wheres that watch and win number

i totally agree with you... although i can understand other guys not wanting the ear ache... but the problem is that the majority of the folk that moaned to me about not closing their gates... were the same folk whos gates needed a sledge hammer to open the latch... if its difficult to open its not gonna be any easier to close... and its not our job to spend 5 minutes opening the gate and the same when leaving the property.

thats a good point that alot of estates are pretty rough and folk would pinch anything left outside...let alone letters and/or packets
but IMHO its not our responsibility to secure that households mail... its our job to deliver it... if the mail goes into a box at the end of the path/drive then its the residents responsibility to ensure its secure and/or collected before anyone else pinches it.
the same as its not our responsibility to post the mail in a box or cage or whatever at the doorstep because the owners dog thats loose inside may destroy the mail...

i think what i'm saying is right... but then again maybe i've just become bitter and uncaring

Then the walks would be even bigger or maybe even collect their mail and packets etc from said box hmmm
