Well ... looks like the party's over ... six weeks ago ... regular walk - knew all the punters, knew all the tricks'n'tips, the people to "go that extra metre" for (and those who deserved less than nowt ); knowing whether or not a bit of o/t was do-able just by looking at the frame ...
... and then I got sent to a neighbouring office to help out for a couple of weeks - and on return found myself "demoted" (is that right ??) to floater/reserve - and since then it's been one long procession of doing this walk/that walk/cover this walk (absence)/cover this walk (sick)/ go to this office/go to that office (often at very short notice); looking for non-existent pouch box keys ("Oh you don't have a car ??? Oh ..."); asking customers where certain streets/houses with names/houses with strange numbers are; still throwing in a walk when the driver is tapping his fingers and looking at his watch; looking and feeling inefficient; seeing the customers thinking "what a useless bunch they are at RM" - or saying "You're a bit late aren't you ?"; STILL being offered the odd bit of o/t and having to say "No can do - I've NO idea when I'll even finish this 'blind walk' ...
Can I join the "Rest of you cynical b*st*rds" club now ?

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been. lol a sight i know well! Isnt it funny how they will stand like a foot away complaining about how long your taking yet will refuse to help with a single letter whilst you run around like a madman trying not to be left behind?! I know its not their fault before any drivers pipe up. I ALWAYS help drivers load the bags every day because obviously the quicker they are ready to go the quicker i get to go home!

You don't need to drive. If there's no pouch boxes it's up to them to arrange to have your bags dropped at your feet when you require them.

I think that's the problem. He said he's lost his duty, while he was at the first other office, and is now being sent everywhere. I don't know whether it's the same in DOs or not. But when you work indoors, they can't just take your duty off you, just because you've been covering something else. But it would be worth him asking his Rep to try to get his original duty back, as I seriously doubt that the Manager was allowed to take it away.

Is it a "lost duty" or just the usual bedding in period where they keep you on a walk for a bit to get you used to things before you have to get accustomed to the harsh reality of part time pond life !! ( Being a pond life member myself I remember those halcyon days well )
Now coming up to 12 years in the job and still not got my own duty, I assumed different rounds every day/week was normal
and the old cynical ba5tards club membership increases everyday, welcome aboard.

Think this sums it up - the "regular duty" was never signed for so ... at least I'm seeing the world (in fact when I took on the "regular duty" the guy who'd been doing it for the previous 9 months then got messed about similar - last I heard he was off sick with depression - hence my thread title) - it jus seems not to be cost-efficient or labour-effficient ... seems like this "Management Method" is but one way of dumbing the whole thing down (power trip ?) ... maybe the fact that my temp contract is up in June has something to do with it - who knows ???
