Should Managers stay till the office closes on a Sat ?

Like a lot of others I found this Sat a real bitch whereupon it seemed the mail enters cleared the machines and sent us stacks of meched DSA along with mountain of packets.

Very early on I could see that there was no way to finish on time but no one in my office was prepared to cut off and it was decided without any proper discussion or meeting that those that needed to would extend, ok fair enough i guess.

I went out with my first trolley load and returned to the office at 11.30am to reload with about 1hr 30min delivery still to complete. I was quite surprised to find the manager had already gone home on such a busy day. I then found out he had actually left at 10.45am. I thought that was a little rich seeing how he had loaded us up with so much work.

However the guy in the locker did not agree and strongly defended him saying he had been in since 5am and had worked his time so why should he not go home. I replied that the fact his being paid 10k on top of our salary and enjoys large bonuses should ensure that the least he should do is stay to 12.30pm when the office closes.

Dunno really, I don’t think anyone is right or wrong here but in most industries the buck stops with the Manager and they are expected to see the job through to the end. What do you think. ?

In my opinion there should always be a manager available till all rounds are completed.

I've raised this with my lino before what if i have fall or get bitten by dog he response was to give me his mobile number

I agree that if you have an accident whilst on delivery there should be a manager in the office to handle any situation.

When i was a driver on delivery one sat i had another car badly rear end the van whilst it was parked smashing in the rear doors. The car was one of my customers and she was quite upset and shaken up. I got the reg of her car etc but she refused to wait and just drove off back up the road to her house and went in. I phoned my then manager and asked if he could come out to knock on her door to take her details of insurance etc and also give me a lift back as i could not close the van doors so it would need to be recovered. He said he would sort it and told me to just cont with the delivery.

About an hour later another postie in a transit turned up with some rope to tie up the broken doors sayin i could then carry on and drive it back I refused to drive the van as the lights were also smashed so in the end we just swapped and he drove it back.

He told me the manager had gone home 10 mins after my phone call

It was never followed up and the driver got away with just her own damage to repair

Our DOM turns up at 7.30am on a Saturday and is gone by 9.30am. The last manager is out the door by 10am - unless something big is going down. A manager should be on the premises at all time whilst there is somebody out on delivery - in my humble opinion. However, this could prove problematic when we've had guys out delivering until 10pm some days (three whole walks - I sincerely hope that god has mercy for fools!).

if your office has agreed to clear on OT then your managers job has been done, personally i would not have worked OT through the week and most certainly not done any OT on a sat.
every person that agreed to work till finish gave your manager an early one, give yourself a pat on the back

My old office wasn't just Saturdays that they buggered off early, it was everyday. Got pretty silly when every Tuesday they had " meetings" to go to and were sodding off before you even got out the door.

we didnt you ring the old bill ?she left the scene of an accident without swapping details

Yes, a Manager should be there till last man in. if any WTL sessions are still held, it should be brought up then.

Our Dom is last in and first to leave everyday. When the dlm gets in on time he happily reads his paper in view of all of us doing ips. Our other dlm spend alot of time browsing the web during working time. Our office is never cleared but dom and dlm always going home early.
In my opinion managers and postman should all work the hours we are paid.

If it had been my car i would have done. However i knew her name and where she lived as i had just delivered her mail

She must have been doing 15-20 mph when she hit the van and i dont think she was wearing a seat belt as she was quite shaken. She just got out and stood there looking at her car (a 57 plate 5 series BMW) which had very little damage other than the bumper and grill being mashed. I came running over and asked if she was alright at which point she started to cry and said she needed to go home. She got in the car and drove off 50 yards to her house parked up on the drive and went in

So i phoned my manager expecting him to come out and help me with the situation or at least advise me but he just asked if i could access the mail (which i could) and then told me to carry on with the delivery

I still thought he would come out and not just send a piece of rope

Same in our office......they even come in, in their casual clothes for a quick getaway.........

They just dont care.........I would hate to see what would happen if a driver had an accident.

Managers have a duty of responsibility to stay until deliveries are done......as for a manager sending out a piece of rope to an RTA....would that not be a discipline case if reported by postie to a union rep? If anyone wearing a blue shirt fails to report accident damage you get your nuts chewed and a serious offence and probable removal from driving,
