Work to rule plea

Post by ronpetetrevchris »

I know some people think this is the worst idea ever, and there are some valid reasons why, but there are always losers in any IA.

If strike action is not supported then would this be an alternative?

The people now saying to me F the CWU if striking is on the cards are people i never thought would say that openly, and yes i do realise talk is cheap. But these people are screaming out for a work to rule and say they will back it massively.

I am a rep and i try to keep the membership as informed as possible, but that is a two way street and i feel it is just as important that the membership viewpoint be presented to the CWU. B ut nobody seems to be listening!

I would like an excercise that lets the membership show their interest in both forms of IA then surely if it looks as if Striking is not supported then you have a reserve plan.

I agree with you completely. Unfortunately, the union don't do 'Plan B's'. They should! They should listen to the reps, they should listen to the membership, they should communicate with us, not dictate to us.

Work to rule yes yes
i"m in a position where i would love to strike and be solid with my other posties BUT its not an ideal world ive worked for RM work 14 years and i know that things are going tits up,but i truely can"t afford a single £ out of my weeky pay or i would lose my house so i think work to rule would be better as im always at least 2 hours over every single week and i know other people in the office are more than that.but theres always some t**t that comes in early drives like an idot and arrives back early when covering your round these people are always the one on 1 hour contracts and dont give a feck about the job.I will add that cuting off is an option but not in my office we are to soft and nobody will make a fuss and stand together they will rather windge about it during sorting i say one in all in but its hopeless.

So tell me if you dont have the bullox to work properly in normal times, which ones of you will be the first and last to break your work to rule.

We all have bills and problems, and if you want to always live like that then continue to doff your cap and do whatever the massa wants,

I think if IA is to be attempted a WTR is the way to start - some information will have to be sent out with any ballot papers, to explain excatly what WTR is, why it's needed, and how members can make it work. HQ might need us to get a WTR, but first we'll need them to get the idea of WTR to us ( especially those that vyed YES, or didn't even bother voting )
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

Working to rule industrial action methods have never worked in Royal Mail. Two principle reasons why is on everyone's 318 duty schedule is as directed. Equally is when any office as a block have done this and I don't indivduals I mean the whole office Royal Mail's tactic has been to take those individuals off pay for breach of contract. Often this either leads to unofficial action in support of the individuals taken off pay or worst still the rest of the office being scared enough to go back to working normally thereby leaving those taken off pay at the mercy of Royal Mail.

Offices like Streatham , Wimbledon and Watford have all seen this tactic used by Royal Mail.

So in my experience of being involved and organising both official and unofficial disputes striking is the only way. Work to rule ballots will simply lead to unofficial strike action as Royal Mail will cause it especially if the office is failing as it will then call that's offices bluff over whether they go out and support those taken off pay or they decide that working to rule is too much of a risk.

I agree with dingo. :nervous
Work to rule on paper is fine,in practice it's divisive, dangerous, unpredictable, impossible to police and ultimately not effective enough to cause the kind of backlog you need to put pressure on the employer.

In my experience of being involved in both official and unofficial action neither works.

When our new revision came in , our office got together because we never got the payment, the whole office cut off , you soon had the area managers down, just lucky they did not pick people off, as my guess is, when you are a minority they will do.
