Working all hours

My office has the P&L and mail volumes were a little below average today, so we were asked to take all the sky mags, most of the election material, and d2d. This is all fair as it would take us up to our time. Unfortunately my colleague decides not to take all the sky mags, even though we were told too.

Anyway, got spot checked from a few managers just as we were finishing about 40 minutes before our time, got told when we got back to the office having only 30 mins left to take the rest of the sky mags out on my colleagues frame. I said fine, but my colleague was arguing that some others have left sky mags on the frame (he does have a point).

Now the principle of working all hours is fine by me, but as we were heading out the door some of my colleagues were finished 45mins before their time (they start later) and left sky mags on their frame. Now do they get caught, or questioned, NO! They get to go home while we work our contracted hours.

Now i am quite happy to work all my hours, what ever they through at me. But its not about an individual or part of an office working all their hours its EVERYONE within the office and it feels like i've been victimised and whos to blame for all of this, it's management.

My colleague likes to get finished early and has always had this mentality stuck in his head. He thought that management wouldn't question about the sky mags and the office had surplus staff. No problems, so he thought. He was wrong and paid the price by not taking the sky mags out, but i did the right thing by taking all the sky mags.

funnily enough same at our office,,,,,loads of election and sky,,,and not a big day for normal mail told we could go but all sky and election had to go,,,,,but im never stupid enough to return,,,i have a post office on me walk so i blue bag returns there

i have highlighted your problem.
if you have surplus time on the end of your shift it is managements job to put that time to good use.

I know what your saying about my colleague trying to finish as early as possible and have explained to him to slow down. He has taken it on board that if we go back to the office way before our time, that management can ask you to do what ever work that is required within the office.

I think the problem we had today was that management were doing a spot check at the end of our shift and told us to do more work of which i am not complaining about. The problem i have is with management for them to try and identify the people that are coming back before their time and getting away with it. I would never in a million years point out which frames have sky mags left from today and would certainly not name call either. This is for the management to look at quite literally.

ok, 2 people have 30 mins per day spare on the end of their shift = 5 hours per week.

multiply this by 5 vans on P&L = 25 hours per week.

25 hours per week surplus = P45 for a part time member of staff and larger duties for the rest.

Not sure why your mentioning surplus hours through out the week and as a end result more job losses. I already know this. I have already mentioned to some of my fellow colleagues to slow down or you will suffer the consequences later on, of course some will never learn.

The point i am trying to make within this thread is why are some getting to go home early, while some are doing the job to their time. I think there needs to be a manager at the door to see who is coming back early and identify what needs to be done about it.

Since this P&L started no one has finished early every single day of the week. What ever way you look at it being lucky or unfortunate, getting back early today only happens once in a blue moon now. The workers that have been in royal mail for 10, 20, or even 30 years know how tough this job has got and some really need to take a reailty check and realise that you can no longer fly round and finish 1 or even 2 hours before your time.

I will be speaking with the union rep on the matter of EVERYONE working their hours, but personally don't see it getting resolved.

I know how you feel. I am on 40 hours and ALL the Part Timers start a good hour AFTER I start work.

This FT PT division frankly depresses and worries me - its like an artificial division is being created for absolutely no reason:

I am FULL TIME - yet I see Part Timers finishing before me - do I feel screwed - no because it is noted and guess who is getting more added in the next revision.
I am FULL TIME - yet I see Part Timers coming in 90 minutes before their start time and finishing only 30 minutes before me - idiots.
I am FULL TIME - and I prep Part Timers duties - do I get pissed off - No - my hours are as they are - if I want docket I will claim, if they refuse or want me to jump through hoops to get it - I cut off.

If Part Timers or Full Timers are pissed off and feel hard done by, why come on here and complain, and then do nothing in the real world, ok sound off if you want but what good does it do.

But if you are complaining on here ask yourself what are you doing in the real world. Complain, complain and complain again. If your manager does not listen then complain again, use the water torture approach on them, eventually they will get pissed off at you complaining and do something. If you really think its unfair treatment then you do have all the options from a grievance to a full blown Employment tribunal to fall back on .

In essence, come on here and complain if you want, but there is no point unless your doing something about it in the real world.

So very true if ft and pt don't stand together there's no chance against RM. Divide and conquer is what RM is all about.


Do the job as it's meant to be and everyone would be happy. Apart from those few fulltimers who look down on part timers as if they are the scum of the earth, you know who you are!!!
