Do i get paid if off sick?

Been with RM for 13 months. Have had a sore calf muscle for weeks now but today after the end of my shift im in agony. Struggling to walk at all. I am PT on one of them 3 month contracts that keep getting extended, never been off sick before. Does anyone know if i receive sick pay if i have to take absence due to said problem? Any help appreciated.

As you been there for 12 months already, sick pay is available for you. I think if you are there for 12 months, you are permanent. So don't worry too much.

get to the drs and get it checked, you might have an achilles prob.

Is it not 3 year for temps? Do temps get sick benefit?

I also thought they could only renew three times before you were made perm.

Thanks for the replies. Someone told me 6 months and then someone said as long as you were in a year. Now your saying 3 years

Does anyone know for definate?

As for the making permanant i was told by my rep that they can keep renewing on 3 month contract for up to FOUR years by law but the union are trying to get it at two years to be made perm.

If i am off tomorrow i will definately be going to the docs anyway cause im in absolute agony. Only so much Heatspray and Co-codamol someone can take.

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules as to when you get made permanent - I got a permanent contract after two years of rolling three-month temp contracts, but was told I was lucky as it is normally three years.

Are you classed as casual? Usually if you are just getting 3 month contracts then you'll be a casual (do you have to wait 2 weeks between each of the 3 months, if you do then you'll be a casual). It all depends on your current continuous service. If it is a year or more then you'll be entitled to full pay, less than a year and it will be statutory sick pay only (you'll only get statutory sick pay after 3 days sick).

Phone HR and ask them.

Started on a 10month contract at end of Jan 2010. Then i got 3 month extension and then another3 month extension. Not classed as a casual and have had no break in employment with RM since i started.

The sickness arrangements that RM has with us is based (I believe) on a permanent contract so I don't think anyone is sure whether it applies to Fixed Term or Casual contracts. Hopefully sickness was covered in your original contract and equally hopefully you kept a copy. If not then I would call HR and get a ruling.

I would have thought that the sickness is the same whether perm or cotract. Well, I would hope so. Am sure it was for me when I was contract (apart from an initial period (1 year?) when you would not get apid at all (basic obviously).

I suppose it depends if the new style 'rolling contracts' retain seniority. If not you'll never pass that year mark if it resets to day one when you get taken on again. Casuals will not be entitled to the same sick pay benefits but I believe the CWU made headway in that department recently (or tried) and rightly so.

The last thing we need is a multi-tier workforce. It's bad enough with full and part time colleagues already.

A member of staff on a FTC for a year will be entitled to the same sick pay as a permanent member of staff as long as their was no break in service during that year.
Even if that year was made up of four 3 month fixed term contracts.

you should just ring HR and they will tell you. i think they can keep you on a temp contract for 4 years before making you perm. however i spoke to my manager today and he said its 3 years if you started on a temp.

Fixed term contracts do get RM sick pay after 1 year of continuous service. Casuals only have a maximum of 3 month contracts at a time so are never entitled to RM sick pay.
