Casual Contract

It was interesting and informative to read the posts with regard to RM contracts. I am close to the end of a three month casual contract (April) and was wandering what is the next step. If RM are satisfied with my perfomance to date etc etc, do they simply extend the casual contract or is a fixed term contract offered. I am currently on the basic hourly rate of £5.98. Thanks

It all really depends on the need in the office rather than your performance am afraid, you will either get let go, be laid off for 2 weeks and re employed on another casual contract, given a fixed term contract, or given a perm contract, all down to the local requirements, best bet to chat to the union rep in the office

I did a three month casual contract at £5.98 per hour just like you. Worked all of November, December and some of January. Two weeks before my last day they said they'd have to lay me off for two weeks then do me another twelve week casual contract on the same basis.

I kicked off and pointed out that that meant I had no security, no sick pay, no payment for D2Ds, etc. They then agreed to an eight hour per week contract. Not much, and eight hours is just saturdays 6am to 2pm. But they then ask me to do o/t for the other five days each week and pay me for one days delivery suppliment. Also means I get some holiday/sick pay/etc.

Didn't realise till contract came through that it is another twelve week agreement, so have to see what happens end of March.
