Speak to the guy who is coming in and tell him that you will work your day off and that
you will choose to do his duty since he is doing that. If you do decide to try that and manager
refuses then you put in a grievance on the grounds of favouritism towards another member of staff.

If you are coming in on your day off,you are a reserve....you have no duty.
Why,then would a manager move one reserve off a duty just to replace him with another?
That's just weak management.

...but we both know that the majority of guys who work their day off would cover a duty in Beirut if it meant 8hrs docket.
It just takes a manager with balls to call their bluff.
Well overtime is optional is it not
And operational needs and all that within duty times
Do we want walks not going out or hard pressed managers having to do them
This ain't no baseball game, you get only one chance and you blew it.
this kind of stuff happens in our office all the time. i remeber when i was a floater and i was doing a nice walk that week. nothing special but not bad. anyway, the cover guy worked his day off and in the morning he came to me and said, "ok im doing this duty today as manager wants me to work day off and i said ok as long as i can do my duty").
trhe people who work their days off should not get special treatment, they are doing overtime, its optional, and they pick what ever the f**k is left. and if they dont like it, they should f**k off. happened to me loads and its horrible when you just started and learning the ropes.
Is there anything I can do about it?
