basic pay facts as requested by Lincox and others
I have been asked to provide pay details , and in a recent thread have been criticised for not doing it quickly enough. I make no apolgies for the delay as I have a primary job of reprsenting the members which comes first last and always.
However for the record prior to the Way Forward that is pre 1999 national pay rates stood at £201.63 for a 41.5 hour working week.
The way forward introduced a unigrade removing the old PHG grade and removed such things as double time overtime , saturday premium , NDA , IHP and consolidated the UPAP into pensionable pay ( similar payment to the now delivery supplement ) In addition there was a reduction of one and half hours off the working week. Pay went up under the way forward to £242.76
In 2001 pay went up to 250.53
In 2002 pay went up to £256.04
In 2003/4 pay went up to £300.00 the introduction of the one single delivery and this incuded for the first time the end of 6 day working and the right for a 5 day or less working week.
In 2007 the exit deal for pay and mod took basic pay to £347
The BTA agreement including the permanent addition to basic pay now stands at 375.16 for delivery staff , £354.56 for mail centres and £365.56 for RDCs.
Now this year that will go up to £380.41 for deliveries , £359.53 for mail centres and £370.68 and RDCs.
Professional drivers current wages are £473.26 Inner London and Outer London are obviously more.
So that is the last 10 years pay , tou make up your mind if that is progress or not. But as someone who was around during the 90s and all the public sector pay caps and freezes and the fact that most staff were on a 6 day week then i think there has been a lot of progress but they were not without strings.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Thanks Dingo....and before you do get a load of flak (beats me why tho ?) remember, if we`re being honest, the £201 for a 41.5 hr working week was really £201 for a 30 hour working week
Always always remember that you still only need work 40 hours.

Ok so now can someone measure this increase alongside the increase in the cost of living and the area where you live and not just public sector pay increases.dingo wrote:I have been asked to provide pay details , and in a recent thread have been criticised for not doing it quickly enough. Postman are still poorly paid no matter what spin you apply.
House prices for example:
1999 2 bed terraced £35000
2011 2 Bed Terraced £140000

Re: basic pay facts as requested by Lincox and others
As i've mentioned in another post that basic pay may have went up, but other additional payments have been taken away to compensate for the basic pay. Those additional payments are d2d, early morning shift allowance, overtime rates (which have dropped considerably), driving allowance.
What royal mail have been doing is taking some stuff away from one hand and putting less in the other. I also see that full time contracts were 41.5 but this has changed over the years and as it stands at present in my office my colleagues including myself have a 39hr contract. Not sure the reason behind the reduction of contracted hours as 80% of the office is still over their time every day. Overtime rates in the royal mail now, compared to 10 years ago is worse. The way i see it some posties are no better off now than they were 10 years ago, and infact some could be slightly worse off due to the overseeing changes in our pay package over the past decade.

£201.63 in 1999 would be equivalent to £291.32 in 2010 according to this website based on CPI However that has a disclaimer (Assuming a yearly inflation rate of 2% from 2006 onwards) http://www.whatsthecost.com/cpi.aspx" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The Bank of England Inflation site says that £201.63 in 1999 is worth £272.51 in 2010. http://www.bankofengland.co.uk/educatio ... /index.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The "thisismoney" website says http://www.thisismoney.co.uk/historic-i ... calculator" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; £262.12 to date.
The Money Sorter website says £244.30 this site also has a reverse one and says that the equivalent wage in 1999 for wage of £380.41 would be £313.96
Then the Measuring worth webiste says up to 2009 http://www.measuringworth.com/ukcompare/result.php" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
£260.00 using the retail price index
£256.00 using the GDP deflator
£286.00 using the average earnings
£288.00 using the per capita GDP
£303.00 using the share of GDP

Re: basic pay facts as requested by Lincox and others
Take home pay and how hard you had to work for it is mostly all that matters.
Did you think that £201.63 was a reasonable wage for what you were asked to do in 1999.
Do you think that £354 for deliveries is a reasonable wage for what you are asked to do now and £354 is what it is dingo because you can't add supplements to our pay now without adding them to our pay in 1999.
I don't really have a problem with the pay,and i didn't have in 2009...for me the dispute was about unachievable workloads,bullying and harassment,savings plans...how have those little gems been tackled in the last 10 years.
Sweep,sweep and lift the carpet.

It's not like that gb and you know it.
It has gone beyond "all paid hours" to what Royal Mail with the help of various "tools"..consider to be "reasonable daily workload".
At the moment IF you know the rules,have a relatively thick skin and a decent rep it is possible to ride this out but who wants to have to fight every day just to do a day's work?
