help me please

hi all been on the royalmail waiting list now for 5 month there are loads of postman jobs in my town where i live but it says fixed temp for 3 month is it really worth doing it ? i work for a parce company full time at the moment been there 10 years but i really want to be a postman the job i seen is for part time any help cheers steve.

Most jobs in RM will only be part time, usually 25 hours over 5 days. Unfortunately, the 5 hours will end up being smack in the middle of the working day, meaning you'll be lucky if you can fit another p/t job around it. The chances of being made up to full time are remote. The 3 month fixed term contract is also usual, although they are renewed, until they need to save some money then it's bye bye.
It is a shame, but we are in the final phase before privatisation and we'll be run down even more.
Sorry I don't have any good news.

It depends you'll need to do some research with local posties.

The reason being:

1. There are some really big changes coming (or are already in for some areas) and job losses are almost guaranteed.

2. Some areas are taking on temps on rolling contracts and then letting them go when the changes come in, or, as in few cases, terminating the contract just before an agreement made with the CWU would change their status.

3. It can be a good way to get a permanent contract, I did it as a Christmas Temp.


TBH if you have a full time job I would stay there as it will have more security than a temp one in RM at the mo.

i am sorry to say that it is not even worth aspiring to be a postman. The job has changed a lot in the last 10 years and even more so in the last 2 or 3 yrs. You will not have time to do anything but deliver letters and you will be lucky if you get paid for every hour you work.

You already have a full time job, so why bother going on to a rolling contract in a company that is sinking fast and one that will likely be taken over soon enough?

3 months rolling contract is an insult! However, I wish dome footballl clubs will use the same method of employment for their players or managers.

If you have a permanent FT job stick with that mate. Almost all jobs with Royal mail are temp part time now and to be honest its rubbish anyway!

There are local budget cutting changes going on all over the country at the moment which involve cutting somejobs. This will cont into the early summer so not much chance of getting a full time contract whilst this is going on, sorry

Looking at the big picture we are waiting to be sold off any time soon (no one know when but we think within the next 12 months). That will bring about more job cuts so not good news there.

If you had no job or another partime job i would agree with teebs as you have more chance of moving up to full time once you are through the door. But to walk out on a 10 year job into a partime with Royal Mail at the moment is very risky.
