FIXED TERM CONTRACT

Post by Reece22 »

hello just joined royalmailchat today, another member of staff told me about this site.

i am on a Temporary Fixed term contract (22.5)hrs lasting 3 months each time, and recieved a letter saying that my services are likely to not be needed come February 9th 2011. (started march 9th 2009) which i think is when the 2nd part of the revision is coming in but being told that we are behind schedule. also saying they will be needing us (managers words) :confused

I have been given my own duty for about 13 or 14 months and have been with the company around 22 months, i am quite high up on the 22.5 hr seniority list.

How long can royal mail keep you on this contract for i have been told by my trainer only one year, my head manager said it is two years, and when i contacted royal mail they said it is four years?!?!?!? :arrrghhh

So anyone out there who is able to help or know the truth about this would be greatly apreciated. Many thanks!!!

In a way all three are partially correct.

After one year you have some protection in law as you cannot be treated differently to a permanent employee...this however will not protect you against termination of a fixed term contract if the procedure has been followed properly.

The CWU have an agreement that after 2 years Royal Mail should substantiate your contract but it's an agreement they have been playing fast and loose with lately.

You are protected in law after 4 years from termination of a fixed term contract.

It is worrying that your contract terminates just before any kind of protection from the union kicks in.

I'm sorry to hear that people that are getting binned, but the job sucks. Think postive, you've just finished your 18 months + prison sentence working for Royal Mail, in fact prison maybe would have been better.
Be postive and look at getting new career.

Problem is, like being institutionalised, you'll miss the inmates banter.

Good luck guys/gals

Hi I joined RM on 19 7 2010 and today i got a letter saying i have the contract extended till 1 4 2011 and also saying that the date reflects our expectation of when the need for your services is likely to come to an end.
is this means that after the 1 4 2011 i will not be employed by RM?

No..it's a standard legal statement for a fixed term contract.
If they said that they expected to need you after this date you could question why it was only a short term contract.
That said it doesn't mean you will be kept on either....it just means you might.
Members have had these before and just been issued with another when the time's up.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

There was an LTB which came out in December or late November. It stated anyone who has done two years from June last year were going to be made up . In some places this has already happened in Anglia and South East. However in some areas Royal Mail have during a fixed timers contract change from a fixed term contract to an event contract which means they do not need to make up a fixed terms contract.

The union believe this is a cheap shot by Royal Mail as many fixed term contract staff will not have been aware that there contract had been changed and talks are now resuming at national level to sort this out.

If a contract changes how can they legally not make you aware? :hmmmm

I am guessing that when the old contract came to end they presented a new one with changes in the small print - the posties then signed them without checking the implications. However, I wonder if affected posties have recourse if they were not advised that there was a change to the conditions, or when handed the contract were told that it was the same as the one before.

There we go again the CWU has to deal with the issues as they stand. Do you really think anyone at CWU HQs were not aware how un popular door to door items were in deliveries , The outdoor department recieved hundreds of letters per year on why they should be ditched. Every Conference a Branch would come and put a motion to cease door to door altogether , every year it was defeated. Even the opposition to door to door is split some on the basis of the pro rata payments , some on the fact that there is an increase with no extra payment and others because it is now part of workload. In fact some oppose all 3.

It was Royal Mail who insisted that door to door got put into workload as it was the only sure way they could improve quality and grow the product. Now what was the union meant to do , refuse Royal Mail the right to deliver mail ? In fact lets look at this in the round would a car plant union refuse to make the mini because they wanted to make Jag instead.

Afterall its work which brings revenue which in turn keeps jobs and pays wages.

Its very easy to suggust that it is the thought of the CWU , but no union should refuse extra work and the door to door into measured workload is extra work.

Now in terms of FTCs well there are over an hundred ftcs since the Headquarters LTB have now been made up to permanent. Others are in the pipeline. In some areas Royal Mail gave a different type of contract and the changed altered from a fixed term to a fixed event , now some staff would not have noticed this change and this is not acceptable and this is what CWU HQs are taking up.

Do you really think that if the CWU had not taken this up then the FTCs who had done two years would have had a job in Royal Mail ? Sometimes things that the union do go un noticed
