Days off on saturday

Post by Nobodyshero »

Just want to know if this is happening at any other offices, the thing is my day off falls on Saturday (Christmas day) but I've been told I won't get it back because its classed as a non service day, now I know we get Monday and Tuesday off but it still means I will have to work my full hours this week for the same pay as others whoes days off fall on any other day . Also, all the spare men we have this week have been told there days off will be Saturday

Seems to be the same all over.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

I'm spare been Monday to Friday since the pressure started, told my manager in no uncertain terms that my day off this week would not be Saturday. Surprisingly he agreed, end of!

if it's your day off that's just the luck of the draw, mine is also saturday and we just have to stomach it. As for RM giving all the spares saturday as their day off, again they are just exploiting that loophole as they always do and we can't do nothing about it.

If your day off is a Bank Holiday Monday , you get that credited back, so why not Xmas day or Bank Holiday Monday Tuesday?

That is not on. I think it's the case that you should be given 2weeks notice of attendance patterns. Ontop of that you are not being treated fairly or the same as the other staff. If all these guys don't normally all get the same day off THEY ARE BEING SINGLED OUT and treated unfairly simply in order to save on the office wages bill. Put in a grievance form.

I know this is an old subject but I have just got an email from an Area Rep and I think it explains the situation and thinking behind it.
In years gone by, when Royal Mail declared Non-Service Days, they insisted that people who were due to work on a NSD had to make up the lost hours of work on other days of that week by attending work for longer. This became known as ‘Claw Back’. CWU Conference policy, which members and Reps from our Branch (including myself) supported for many years was to abolish this ‘Claw Back’. This was achieved in about 2005. So, we now have the situation where, when Royal Mail declares a NSD, those members who would normally be working on that day do not have to make up the lost hours, and still get paid their full wage. This is good for those members.

I might point out at this time, that no-one in Royal Mail gets an extra day off credit for any NSD which coincides with their day off. This is, of course, in line with the normal situation for anyone who works a Monday to Friday working week in any other industry. It is also the reason why this year everyone has had the Christmas Day Bank Holiday moved from Saturday 25th December to Monday 27th December, and why Boxing Day Bank Holiday was moved from Sunday 26th to Tuesday 28th December. If this didn’t happen, then I’m sure every Trade Union member in the country, CWU or otherwise, would be up in arms about being robbed of their Bank Holidays.

This does, of course, mean that for the week of Christmas, some of us will have worked a full 40 hour (or 39 hour) week (including myself), while others will have worked less than this and still been paid for a full 40 hour week.

Some members have been critical of this, and feel that they have been disadvantaged in comparison with the majority of their fellow posties, because they have worked a full week, whilst most haven’t. However, no-one has actually ‘lost out’, and most members have gained, from this practise.

Another aspect of this issue is that some members have asked why they have not been credited with an extra day of annual leave when their day off has coincided with a NSD.

The answer is simple: people get a compensatory day of annual leave credited to them if their day off falls on a Bank Holiday. So anyone who was due to have a day off on Monday 27th or Tuesday 28th December, or Monday 3rd January should have an ‘extra’ or compensatory day of leave added to their leave card. (Members should be advised to check that their manager has actually given them this extra day.)

A Non-Service Day is not a Bank Holiday. This year the Bank Holidays were moved so that people did not lose out. Saturday 25th December and Saturday 1st January were not Bank Holidays.

Can you imagine Royal Mail’s response if we said that we wanted people whose day off fell on a NSD to get a compensatory day of annual leave? I can, because it we have heard it before: they would say that everyone will have to work all their hours for Christmas week, which would have meant Monday to Friday for everyone this year, losing most people their usual day off. In a year where Christmas fell on a Friday and Boxing Day on the Saturday, they would want 40 hours from everyone over Monday to Thursday, i.e. no-one keeps their normal day off, and everyone works a 10-hour shift for 4 days. In fact, this did used to happen in years gone by.

In short, whilst some might feel that they are being disadvantaged by others not working their full hours on a NSD week, they are not losing anything. Most people do not have Saturdays off, and so most people gain a day off by the ‘no Claw Back’ agreement for NSDs. Whilst it may not be perfect, it is a vast improvement over what went on before.

The real issue is not clawback itself but the arbitrary moving of members(especially reserves) day off to coincide with a non service day.
That is a subject the union should be taking Royal Mail to task over.
