Finishing work early...

If you finish, say, an hour early on Monday, can the boss ask you to make it up on tuesday?

I don't think so, but what is the OFFICIAL line on this?

It happens all the time in my office, and since I've just been voted Union Rep, I'd quite like to put a stop to it...

Ask your old rep for a copy of any local agreements that might be in place and pick your way through them.

Every rep should keep copies of every agreement..local or national.
Only a total prick would refuse to hand these over.

I found a few scraps of paper from 2003.....and that was it.
All the major National Agreements I downloaded from RMC and as for local ones - I think they began and ended with the rep doing f**k all.

No! Monday was History. And if you go over by 15 Minutes on Friday and you don't book over time do you hear him say come in 15 Minutes later in the Morning...

theres a guy in our office one of those stick to rules fully etc. he banks hours problem is when its summer and its finihsing early he tells managers he finishs early and so gives royalmail the hours back, the ones be bankj when it was busy. fuckni nutter. if it said in the royal mail hand book mail yourself home after work he 100 percent would try.

Any official local agreements will be between the members and local management but should be endorsed at branch level to ensure they are within national guidelines.
If you want them reversed you will have to sit down with the members and management.
Your ADR and branch will be able to help if the exrep is a tosser.

Yeah, he's a tosser. In fact, perverse as it may sound, but our DOM is FAR more concerned about our wellbeing and such than our rep ever was.

This is the single biggest unresolved issue for me,and ultimately the reason i left the union.
okay,to try and answer the OP's question,the reason you finish an hour early is due to a lack of planning/resourcing,as far as i'm concerned on a daily basis you have scheduled hours of attendance,for example you could be due to leave at 9.30am,but do you have 3 1/2 hours work(upto the manager to ensure)now at 9.10am if the manager releases you,effectively he's saying he's satisfied you have enough work to take you to your time(applicable to everyone).
The major exploitation for management,appears to be your contractual hours,most people will be employed for 40hours,not 8 hours per day,locally this has been perfectly abused,so if you 'work over' one day you may not get paid overtime,as you could finish early another day(this was verbally agreed by our area rep,despite no written agreements)
BTW,we were told it's not trying to bank hours(presumably because trials were scrapped/no agreement exists)but ensuring all paid hours are utilised!
