This is called “park & loop”. We park up the van, fill up our trolleys, head off in two different directions, spend 40 minutes or so completing the loop, then come back to the van to drive off to the next parking spot.
Now this would be fair enough if it actually worked, but it doesn’t. Someone somewhere has made a serious error in their calculations.

Re: Park and Loop
We are yet to be treated to P+L In our office, some we are being treated to in the early new year,Whilst I understand most aspects of P+L,their is one bit I dont know.
Does person do all the walking if they are a non driver and the other person does all the driving.Know someone who went to another office that has had P+L and its a disater ,but they had to do most of the walk whilst the other guy had the van and did all the packets.
Dont sound fair but I suppose you can only do the maximium outdoor bit and thats it ,regardless.

Re: Park and Loop
It does make it a bit awkward if only one on P&L can drive . If there are large packets that need to be delivered by van maybe the non driver can pick up part of the drivers loop allowing the driver to shoot off and deliver the loops larger packets . If the non driver won't do this then they will just have to wait until the driver's delivered the larger packets on that loop . If you get partnered with someone with a bit of common sense it can be worked out fairly and you can move through the 2 duties with very little down time .kendo1 wrote:We are yet to be treated to P+L In our office, some we are being treated to in the early new year,Whilst I understand most aspects of P+L,their is one bit I dont know.

We've been on P&l now for a month , me and my partner can both drive so whoever completes their loop first goes off in the van to deliver the larger packets for those 2 loops . We can't move any more fluently than we are now and have only finished on time twice in the last month , and this is with no D2D's , tracked items and in the last 2 weeks getting out early because we're not waiting for the last wagon .

Re: Park and Loop
Our repick for P&L is underway and there are some seriously unhappy people in the office.
It would have made sense to me to have 2 cover men work together, so that non-drivers could also pick into the cover duties and everyone is working with the same person all the time. But no, the pairs have different days off and all the cover duties now have to be drivers.
Now it's gotten halfway down the seniority list there are no duties left for non-drivers to pick into, so they have no choice other than to go as a leave reserve and basically lose their seniority. If you can't drive you needed 12 years service to get your own duty, but there are people well down the list who can drive and are going to get a decent pick.
When I asked the union rep why the covers worked like this, as it didn't make any sense, he said 'because then we have 2 drivers in a van more of the time'
WTF?
All it's doing is creating an army of non-driving leave reserves, who can only cover a small percentage of the duties. Who's going to cover the walks when the drivers are off and almost all the leave reserves can't drive? It's as if the management/union rep think that they can play around with the staffing to suddenly create more drivers.

Re: Park and Loop
its a joke , we started a week before dec which we told the doms was a bad idea , we start at 5.30am on ips , he had people throwing our walks in and we wasnt leaving the office till 10.30 -11.00 we didnt take any big parcels , tracked , d2ds as you didnt have time and the earliest we finished was 16.15 - 17.15 , posting in the dark and freezeing conditions , we had no input at all and knew just by looking at the maps that you had no chance to do them , so its down to the planner , dom, cwu rep to sort it out as weve all said we will not be working over our finish time.skull wrote:It does make it a bit awkward if only one on P&L can drive . Surely it makes sense to have drivers driving and non drivers non driving.
Was a preference excercise not done? Why are people who can drive choosing not to when there are driving diuties that need to be covered?
Good luck in the summer when you get loads of absorption due to no driving cover.

Re: Park and Loop
It's how the Rep has agreed the pick will work. Preference exercise was done, the walks themselves actually look ok (like all these revisions though the indoor work is where it's going to fail) but the repick is stupid, I can't get my head around the fact they are having single cover men instead of pairs, which would then ensure everyone is working in their pairing every day.pickaname wrote:Why are you doing this?

I said in a WTL session a few months ago that people who can drive and are choosing not to are costing non driving staff their seniority as they can't pick into those pairings. Now I understand that some people don't want to drive for RM, but these are the same people that are using their own cars on delivery now. They'll use their own car and pay for it but won't drive a free van? Wtf is that about?
Tbh I don't give a monkeys about absorption, walks or whatever as i'll be working 7hrs 48 a day regardless and i've got a decent duty with someone i'm mates with anyway. I just feel for the guys that have got over 10 years in and have no fixed duty.
