Who to speak to about unfair O/T allocation?

Post by sodiium »

Hi guys.

The cwu rep's going to sort out the xmas o/t this week. Usually happens any p/timer that wants f/t hours gets it over the pressure. Spare bodies get sent to Mail Centre.

Last Xmas
The rep is a f/t driver and he is going to try allocate where him & his f/t drivers work 6 days (includes their rest day) & also get 4hr o/t everyday to do packets. Thats at least a whooping 68 hours per week. Last year they had this from the end of Nov till 24 Dec.

I am a p/t 25 hr back shift collection driver. I would have liked a small slice of the above but wasnt that bothered as i'm further down the food chain and usually get made up to 40 hrs (over 6 days) during the 2 weeks of pressure. But last year the rep said i cant do o/t as i was unable to work my day off (sat). I had started another job on sat afternoon to pay the bills. Only so long a person can survive on 25hr /week with sporadic o/t.

In the end my managers gave me f/t hours for the pressure. I was in 1st day, then on the 2nd day manager calls me in to say sorry he cant give me f/t but cwu rep will explain it all. I was told by rep i cant get pressure time unless i work it over 6 days. Says if i get o/t over 5 days then "its going to open up a can of worms as everyone is going to want it" and it would'nt be fair if i was the only one gettiong it. This was bollocks as at two p/timers were getting it. But they had been in the job 12+ years each, this is only my 4th xmas.

Last year i couldnt work at all on sat (apart from easter, summer, xmas holidays) as i had to look after the baby in the morning as wife was at college. Then when she got home i had to go start my other job.

From Now Till Xmas
This year i've told the rep i can work sat mornings as wife no longer at college but he says he needs me for the sat afternoon collection & to take the mail to the mail centre. What he wants is me and another p/timer to do the collections as it is really heavy at xmas so they dont have to. I wouldnt mind but i've got another job at that time.

I spoken to my manager today about getting some o/t as the f/timers drivers are getting it again starting this week. He said speak to the rep about getting a day here and there as the rep is dealing with the drivers hours. I spoke to the rep & he says he "will speak to the boys about it". He even said i've "got to do the collection to let the guys grafting hard in the morning get away early". To me this means do the saturday collection like a good little boy if you want any weekday o/t. He's going to flaff me off and if that doesnt work, offer the saturday collection duty which he knows i cant do. I dont mind coming in on the sat morning to get the other o/t but he's not offering that.

Now i'm a bit annoyed. Does anyone who i should take this issue to if it cant be solved within the office?

Thanks in advance

Sounds like your rep is feathering his own nest big time,
aren't rep's supposed to be "for the people" ?
it also sounds like your gaffer is the type who just wants the quiet life :shhhhh
i think the best way to approach it is to speak to your rep and insist you have the right to some of the OT,
and tell him straight to his face, you feel it's unfair and if necessary you will speak to the divisional rep to find a solution,
i wouldn't go behind his back, at least if u give him the option to sort it out first, he can't complain if he gets a bollocking.

good luck.

Sounds to me like the rep is running the office and needs to be reminded of his true position and brought down a peg or two. I WOULD go behind his back to show him you are not someone to get messed around.

He shouldn't be e Rep. Put in a grievance against him and take it as high as you can (discrimination against P/T). O/T should be equal for everyone, been 1, 5 or 10 years in the job doesn't give you any more rights than anyone else.

I just so feel for you... I don't think that theres anyone that hasn't seen a rep looking after number one at sone point or other. What can you do??? Is a quiet word with him a possibility ..... tell him your having a really tough time and its all about getting the kids a few presents if he doesn't listen to you after that... shoot him!

Nuclear option, Why???? His attitude is worse than a Manager. And try to find anywhere O/T is allocated on seniority. Ruling of postman who has been there 20 years, but not RM. Maybe you could tell me the difference between a postman of 20 years service and one of 5 years. None. both of them know the job as much as each other. This attitude of "I have been here 20 years is sick" and time to grow up a bit. Oh. and by the way, I am F/T over 10 years service and hardly do O/T

Report the b*gger to the Area Rep.

These kind are the ones that give the Union a bad name.

Have the same in our DO, not as bad though, The favourites including the Rep get the O/T, P/Timers aren't even aware that they can do the earlies and nights O/T. :evil/mad

Thanks for the advice guys.

Will find out about xmas hours by middle of next week. If its not reasonable then i'll have another word with the rep & then the manager before taking it up the chains of command.

A grievance (against management) was put in by another p/timer in the summer but even after all the interviews he says it was a waste of time. Nothing changed.
