Basically it is to do with redundancy, where a company is paying you "notice pay" without allowing you to come into work until your official finishing day. During "Garden leave" you should not be employed by any new employers that did not exist before the redundancy procedure started...

I thought that's what managers went on when it was finally realised that they had f**** up too much to keep them out of trouble.

It is a euphemism for suspended (usually on full pay)

It is of often used with contracters when you don't want them to go and work for a competitor. Basically you keep them under your employ until their knowledge of the contract is out of date.

Sven went on it for 2 years after he was sacked by the FA. Apparently he now has the best garden in Leicester.
