Jury Service

Going to do my civic duty,jury service, in a few weeks:nervous, can anyone help me with the problem that has cropped up ?? Obviously, if selected, I will be attending court Mon-Fri and my DOM knows this, so he has suggested that I would be available to do a duty on the Saturday(s) !! Ive argued that I would be "working" my hours over the 5 days in the court but he is getting quite insistent !! Basically, where do I stand ? Can I refuse to attend work on the Sat, if Ive been in court all week? Thanks in advance for any advice

Tell him do one, :mfo your working for the Government that week and not your employer, I would speak to your area union rep about this, its stressful enough without going in on a Saturday, Ring him up the first day on Jury service, or get someone to ring him, and tell him you have been put up in a Hotel till further notice, he cannot question that, let him do a walk on Saturday instead of going home early...

The jury service do not pay Royal Mail.
YOU claim for loss of earnings from the court and Royal Mail make it up to basic pay.
If your normal day off is Wednesday and you make a claim for loss of earnings for that day you are committing fraud.
Any decent DOM would have changed your day off to Saturday...i guess yours is a prick.

The jury service do not pay Royal Mail.
YOU claim for loss of earnings from the court and Royal Mail make it up to basic pay.

While i understand what you are saying,i don't think the dom has to change anything or the opg to suck up.
As eric said he will be working for the gov,he will work his 40hrs and that is enough.

Think about it....if you were part-time and only worked Thursday,Friday Saturday and you got called for jury service Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday...would you be able to take the rest of the week off.
Jury Service isn't instead of work it's your civic duty in your own time or work time...holidays or whatever...it doesn't have anything to do with work or Royal Mail.

How can I get my name up for jury duty? I was called twice in a 2 year period, and I wanted to do it, but my employer said I was unable to be released on both occaisions, is there anyway I can signal my ability to appear on a jury?

This is part of the form that Royal Mail(Your DOM) has to fill in before you serve on a jury.

Your employee may be required to attend court every day during the period of jury service, but it may be possible to release your employee, either for whole days or half days, during that period of service. If this happens, your employee must return to work if at all practicable. Please complete the statements opposite to state whether it is possible for your employee to return to work for either whole or half days.

But rightly or wrongly if i get called for JS for 'a week' there is no f***ing way i will work for RM on the sat.
Obviously if on the say Wed i am told i am not needed for the rest of the week then that's different.

Others may swallow s**t but my office wont,we've had guys on JS before and it has never been a problem.

If you get picked for a Jury and the case goes on for a few weeks what will the DOM say then!

Our DOM Support guy put me down as my day off on the Saturday!

At one time I got put on "short" trials so even Thursday you could be needed for a 2 dayer! Saying that some never got called to be on the jury at all!

Got a card to buy your food at the jurors cafe, lots of free coffee were consumed!, you don't get a great deal, but better than nothing! And the cost of travel! First time I'd been on a bus in years!!!

Plus take a book! lots of waiting!!!

When i went for my second lot of jury service there were some members on a big fraud case , it had been going on for 8 mnths and the judge was into his 2nd wk of summing up

and he came in on the Saturday

When I did it, I came in on the Sat, depends how much you enjoy the job I guess, I had no problem coming in, as for jury service, bored out of my mind, sitting around waiting for legal teams and judges to argue points of law while we sat around doing sweet fa. Enjoyed the experience once in court, but can you imagine how much money is wasted across the country at these places, I think it would top up our pension fund in 6 months.
