1st Week in October Bring them down to Earth.

Post by Eric Cantona »

I think the way we have been treated by Royal Mail and the CWU we should take the company and the union on ourselves and show solidarity, instead of sitting back week after week taking the same old crap, I’m going for the 1st week in October for two weeks only.
BAN OVERTIME.
WORK TO YOUR TIME.
TAKE YOUR BREAKS.
DON’T COME IN EARLY.
DON’T WORK YOUR DAY OFF.
NO CAR ON DELIVERY.
Do the job right and give the managers a run around, if you remembered when we were on strike the back log was cleared by overtime, when the heavy snow came last year the mail built up and up because nobody could really clear it, we need to do something like this again, the company would come to a standstill if we do this, who really needs the union, there doing nothing for us, I bet a union rep won't come on and say they are doing something, we need to think of our future, and get these bullish tactics cut out.
Lets get this round to many offices as possible.
We need RM to listen to us and the managers, I think the managers are under immense pressure as well as us, we need to get it further than our DOMs .
Lets go for it Starting 4th October..

Some people can't afford to not work overtime or their days off so asking them to do it day in, day out, isn't feasible.

i advocated doing just that before the last strike,i was told it was too hard to organise....................................easier just to sell us out while we lost money for nothing

No-one should need to work overtime to pay for the essentials...luxuries can be sacrificed.
If you need overtime to live you are walking a tightrope wearing a blindfold in a thunderstorm and you will fall off.

Well to some extent I'm with you on this issue however, part timers with a family have little option but to work the hours they are offered. I'm at the other end of my working life but I well remember having three children and being the only one working with a mortgage to pay, I would work 7 days a week to support them and frequently did and take on odd jobs to earn a little extra.

The problem is there are so many on part time contracts expected to work overtime as a matter of course and it goes on for so long it becomes the norm.

Whilst I agree that no-one should rely on OT (I cant be arsed to do any at all) with the understaffing in most offices I doubt OT will dry up anytime soon.

20+ walks to cover on OT in my office every day.

It was the part timers and those on 1 hour contracts I was referring to. If I was full time, I wouldn't do the overtime. I don't particularly NEED the overtime to live on, but the extra helps me buy things to make my house less of a shell and more into a home.

Some people NEED the overtime as it's the only way they can make up a reasonable wage given their contract.

So, like I said, asking them to do it for 2 weeks is one thing, asking them to do it day in day out, isn't feasible. It's not full time staff that are going to be hit as hard with work to rule as part timers, and we've already been done over once by the CWU and RM when it comes to agreements and pro rata rubbish. Is it fair to ask the bulk of the people that do the overtime to pack it in when it's only overtime to make it up to a full time wage?

If part timers just worked their contracted hours instead of working 40+ every week (but on overtime) Royal Mail would have to give out full time contracts . They're part timers in my office who have been on full time hours for years but they aren't going to get full time contracts while RM save on holiday pay, sick pay ,bonuses, and delivery sup

I agree but it applies to full-timers as well.
You cannot argue for more full-time jobs in your office if every full-timer is scooping up 10 hrs on S.A.

Its alright saying “do it day in, day out if your man enough” but the part timers cannot afford this, RM rely on part timers to do the overtime because they are on short hours, like someone said earlier they might make them full time then or up their hours, if the union brought us out on a complete two week strike then we would have something to moan about, this is basically leave them in the s**t for two weeks ONLY to see how they cope..
Only problem is that there is a hardcore of grabbers in every office (mostly full timers) and they just will not do it...
