Salary of a postman

Hello, I am new and after leaving school, I am thinking of becoming a postman. I just don't know if i can live on the salary what I guess at £15k.

I am in Scotland, what do you think I would earn as a royal mail postman?

Is overtime available if you want it? I would work up to 55 hours per week.

Choose another career path...involving further education if possible.
This job should only be used as a stopgap for someone your age..not a career.
The basic salary is around £18,500 full-time for your area plus a supplement depending on the function,but you will be lucky to see a full-time job before your 40th birthday.

Thats ok fishtank. I have a few other ideas! But the postman sounds really good. I am a big introvert, and prefer working alone, kind of why I was thinking of a postman.

Basic Pay
As a guide, new employees aged 18 and over will receive basic pay of around £256 a week for full-time hours rising to £285 - £311 after 1 year. This rate will be on a pro-rata basis for part-time hours. Higher rates are paid in Inner and Outer London and in some parts of the South East.

Are you serious? So they only recruit you for a few months and then you have to leave?

A slight exaggeration but not by much.
We don't usually recruit full-time staff,only part-time and usually on a fixed term contract.
Back in the old days when i started you could more or less walk into a full-time position but now we have guys waiting 5,6,7 years and sometimes longer.
As far as working alone is concerned that only applies to the outdoor element of the job,indoor is hectic much like a factory and in the future the majority of posties will be working in pairs outdoor.

That is rubbish. Oh well, I must continue my search into another career. If there was a chance of full time jobs, I would still be really interested, but that is a nightmare recruiting method for anyone looking for a secure job for life.

At the end of the day it's a job and if you need something to tide you over until you find something better then go for it.
The staff are a great bunch...the managers...aren't.Just don't expect too much and it will pay the bills.

Think again.
My oldest kid is 19 and I don't think he could physically do what we do every day. It is a man's job, not a boy's.
I certainly wouldn't advise anyone to join Royal Mail at that age.
And while the staff might be a great bunch, it won't be like school. You will need to be able to stand up for yourself.
Do your highers, do some more highers, go to college/university - try and get as good an education as you can.

Jack,baring in mind the job market now for you guys,well for everyone tbf,i would say go for it,you will be part time so that gives you the time to look around for something else.
A little job is better than none at all mate.

There are people on here who used RM for a stop gap but are still here 30 odd years later.
So you never know mate.

Also you wont have to start at the crack of dawn so your social life won't suffer.Plus you'll have money to spend.

As your living at home with your parents you are lucky to have the time to try out a few jobs so until something better comes along, so i would say give a Postmans job a go, why not But look for something better for the future

There is an old saying that goes "it easier to find a job when you already have one" and i think its true as you can then take your time and not jump at the first offer.

Its hard work though and nothing like sitting on your jacksy playing the old Xbox

There's often enough overtime to regularly make hours up to those of full timers.
Also there's a chance of full time after a few months if you apply for vacant walks nobody else is interested in.

My advice to anyone leaving school or college, unless you have a particular vocation, then look to be an artisan of some sort, carpenter, bricklayer, plumber, plasterer, mechanic, welder, civil engineering, with the exception of civil engineering most of these jobs you can do alone - these are all jobs that always need doing - as for education.....................well I think that particular avenue has run its course...................... who wants to be the best educated unemployed person in the dole queue.
