If you're serious, approach your Manager for a discussion, ask to be sent on a course (laygo i think) then after that you'll have to deputise in a different office for a while (years) then either wait to be appointed a Manager of a DO or apply yourself when a vacancy arises (Royalmailgroup.com).

We just had letters sent out to every D/O asking if any one wanted to be a deputy in the ll postcode.

Or suffer serious harrassment for failing to "tow the Company line". I've seen a couple go for Management positions, and packed it in after a while, because they couldn't cope with the attitude of their "superiors". Who expected them to treat their Collegues like a commodity, rather than people.

If you think you can stand up to the pressure to conform, and keep your morals. Then go for it. A minority do manage to keep their morals. But they're so rare, that some Posties think that they're mythical. Although I've had the good luck to work for a couple of them.

As others have said: If you still want to go for it. Then speak to your own Manager and ask if there's any opportunities available at the moment. And even if there aren't. There could be in the future. And your Manager would then know in advance that you're interested.

I’d be a little wary of applying at present. It’s inevitable that there will be cull of managerial positions in order to reduce costs. Moya, the Mad Axe Woman has yet to arrive on the scene but you can bet your bottom dollar that when she does, jobs are going to disappear at all levels.

Unless you are either in an area, or prepared to move to one, that has a shortage of managerial candidates then to switch positions at this time would make you more vulnerable. Keep your head down for the time being and see where the axe is going to fall first.

I agree with the advice already given. Its not a very good time to move up as you can bet it will be last in - first out. My advise would be to sweat it out as a blue shirt for now and let the dust of coming change settle before you make a move.

I really cant say how long that’s going to be though, no one knows

Andy DOMs are only administrators now unable to make a decision without consulting the SOM who may or may not give the nob to any given scenario.

Who more than likely has visited the said office once or twice.

My DO is littered with failed would-be managers. I always wonder what it is that makes them revert to the blue shirt, but then I remmeber the gaunt, haunted expression on their faces and I don't need to ask
