1 in 4 saturdays off.........ideas please?

We had our WTL this morning, our DOM announces that D2D £20.60 supplement is due to go live on 7th June, our office rep argues and says you can't implement the bits of the agreement you want to without the bits that we want being implemented also, where are our 1 in 4 saturdays off?? His reply........not one of you has come to me with any ideas on how we will make the 1 in 4 saturday thing work!!! Cheeky bar steward, like it's our responsibility to come up with the plans!!! Anyway, being proactive, has anyone got any decent ideas about how we make the 1 in 4 saturday thing work?

What about going to every other call on your frame on a saturday, regardless of whether they have live mail, this is an idea for towns, i realise this won't work with rurals but obviously 1 man could then cover 2 walks, they'd need to be close obviously, thsi should then free up other townies who either already know or could learn rurals and depending on ratio of rural to town walks this should enable at least 1 in 4 saturdays off, the left mail goes on a monday as it would anyway....I dunno, what do you think?

Missing calls to enable doing a second walk doesn't sound right somehow - you may miss a call but you still have to cover the ground in between them ! I think this is a calculation that many managers have used in the past to help them argue that a low traffic day is an easy one, when in fact that is not always the case. I deliver to a complex of flats where the doors are all about fifteen feet apart - the difference between delivering to 30 flats and 80 flats is only 5 minutes - I have to walk past them all so a quiet day saves me very little time.

I had something similar today ( although none of my drops are in flats ), really light day for mail, but it was mostly one letter for about 96% of drops....so even though I had far fewer bags, I walked roughly the same distance, in the same time.

Only way I can see this happening is if they get us to always work Thursdays or Fridays, the usual heavy days for the week.

At our recent "group hug" meeting on the warehouse floor, which incidentally had no formal announcement and therfore I arrived early for shift but part way through, our CEO(?"top dog" manager with seperate office) was suggesting that we could do a local agreement where our depot does not take up the 1 in 4 saturdays off option...

Even though Saturday is not the easiest day for my round (unusually its Monday, but I have the high street bussinesses, who rarely have specials/recorded/any packets oin Monday), I would personally be quite happy to keep the "status quo" and have a long weekend every 7 weeks. Ok, I've missed the odd Grand Prix live qualifying few minutes, but its the final session that matters so I'm not too bothered about working most Saturdays. However, I appreciate that many have youngsters and other things they would like to do on Saturdays.

In many respects, I don't know why each section manager does not ask each postie in turn in their section which two days they would like to have off. If too many want the same days off, they could alternate between the preferred day and a second best option.

My take is they wil try to take Part timers out of the Sat Rotata completley so full timers will ge tthe Sats and Pt's will get a day off during the week, only way from what I can see, especially when Offices get to 75% / 25% ratio. A 1 : 4 system is theoretically possible.

The only flaw in that arguement is that would surely be a form of discrimination, especially if you are already employed on a 5 out of 6 basis.....and are those PTs not entitled to a weekend life, irrespective of whether they have kids or not - I have no kids, ( and I don't mind sacrificing leave picks or days off, or evenings to help out those who do ) but I like riding my bike or going shooting, and most of the time they revolve around the weekend
