''It's Time for Change'' Road Show

Post by MinisterofCucumber »

How about 'It's Time to tell the Truth for a Change':

1.725% a year pay rise.

Goalposts moved on Colleague share dividends making them payable when revision targets are met instead of when Group profit targets are reached.

Unspecified changes to the IR framework to be made this Autumn.

Union officials obliged to help management implement whatever changes they want to make.

World Class Mail team working ensures that management can always argue that staff consultation has taken place.

Everyone must work as fast as the top 10 per cent.

Delivery staff to work harder, finish later on Saturdays and take a pay cut.

All valid points.

I think if someone far more clever than me could set a topic on here to use as a resource to produce posters and pamphlets to get the No vote message across. I think we have some strong arguments on here to at least get some amendments to the agreement.

We need an ORGANISED campaign against the leadership.I havnt got a printer for my computer but gonna try buy one today and start gathering info from the site to hand out to members in my office and also on my day off hand some out at other offices,we need to get the message out and not only win the arguments on line.

I've included the pay freeze by dividing the 6.9 % rise over 4 years instead of 3.

Nice spin but why dont you look at it this way :

1/ The increase for the national rate in deliveries with the compound effect will be an increase of £46.12 which will be paid week in week out and not effected by automation or decreases in traffic. For processing staff its an increase of £24.50 . For professional drivers it is an increase of £39.83. London pay ranges increases above those figures.

2 Colleague share has been agreed in this plan and will be paid and is no longer dependent on profit which Royal Mail do not expect to make in Royal Mail letters until the 3rd year of the plan. In addition anyone who has joined Royal Mail since colleague share was introduced would have not recieved a penny now they will.

3. With regards to the Industrial relations framework well It was introduced in 1992 and then ammended in 1995 and 1998. It has been the subject of on going talks for a decade. In fact under pay and mod there was even a joint working party set up which went nowhere. Members will have a vote on any future IR framework if there is one and Dave has already stated that a discussion document will be bought to annual conference. So no one is voting on unknown changes thats just another red herring.

4. You do the union a mis service by stating that the union is obliged to implement whatever management want. You clearly have either not read the agreement or have an hidden agenda. It might be popular on this site for some to slag of the union in every thread but that does not make it true. For the record Royal Mail` orginal revison process which they wanted the union to sign into stated ONCE THE DOM IN CONJUNCTION WITH THEIR DSM AS WELL AS THE PLANNER AND THEIR AREA LEAD IS CONTENT THAT A DUTY SET WHICH MEETS THE OBJECTIVES OF THE REVISON HAS BEEN FORMULATED IT SHOULD BE FORMALLT AGREED WITH THE FRONTLINE REPS OF THE OFFICE. The delivery section of the agreement now provides real involvement at every level before any revison is introduced and has to achieve the joint objecitves.

5.World Class mail is another Total Quality Method which Royal Mail have tried to introduce ever since the Employee agenda. The union has now within this agreement full involvement in the World Class Mail. The agreement committs Royal Mail a range of issues on WCM and provides safeguards.]

6. Again everyone has to work at 10 per cent, the reality is that this is covered in the fact that we have to agree the standards and we have to understand why there are differences. It could be an office is very productive because everyone starts before their time and that the majority of the office is part time and everyone uses their cars. This agreement committs Royal Mail to certain issues which mean if the top ten fall out of the principle of 75 /25 or allows for people to start early or have unsafe methods of work it will not be considered in the top ten.

7. Delivery staff to work harder ? Not true , you can only work as hard as the finishing time you have. Lets be totally honest here that some people cut corners and cause themselves stress in their desire to finish earlier. This is why delivery methods CDVs are better then allowing people to carry up to 10 bags per day and some to load their own cars up. Why would anyone work harder then now you can only work till your finish time and with agreed standards managemnt cannot introduce their own made up ones to bully you.

Now the issue of later Saturdays is not one anyone would like to have in the agreement. But whether you vote for the agreement or not later Saturday will come in when walk sequencing is introduced. Look some people have finish times of 12 or 12 30 on Saturdays. Well that was ok when Mail sort 3 was a huge growth area but now it has all but disappeared to downstream access. Now the traffic on a Saturday is on par with a Friday and we cannot in principle argue that we need extra hours on a friday to deliver that traffic but less on a Saturday. In addition due to walk sequencing your second 40% of work will not arrive in your office until after 0800 and as late as 10 in the morning this will then need to be subject to prep and delivery. However most will be finish by 2 and the 92% of staff by 02.30. Of course that may be later than now but you either accept that Royal Mail will not agree to not running walk sequecing machines on a Saturday of you dont.

Now in regards to most postal workers taking a pay cut. Well thats not true the vast majority will see a rise. There are 99 500 FTEs in delivery and less than a quarter will lose. Out of that quarter the lose ranges from a couple of pounds to thousands from the Door to Door barons. Now again every one does not want anyone to lose but sometimes there is a real opportunity to safeguard jobs by putting that work into workload but still keeping the money and if the product grows then we can have a share of the increased revenue.

So what is your alternative to the deal. As someone who has never been shy of a strike is that really what you believe is the answer especially as some who are calling for it dont have any trust in the CWU at National level in any case to negotiate a new agreement. In any case a strike for you will mean little as you dont work in Royal Mail letters.

How do you justify this statement.
We might not work longer, but we will definitely work Harder. Or do you consider taking unlimited D2D 6 days a week as working at the same level. When we all work at the rate of the top 10% we will be working harder.

.
In my Office all bar 2 will be worse off, this includes reserves and floaters. We have no D2D barons, just FT and AG staff who do the job properly. If our office is anything to go by only 5% will be no worse off. even in offices who still have pure packet or firms deliveries I cannot believe that over 50% would be better off. show some genuine figures to back up this claim.

Spin, Spin and more Spin.

The Truth said

"Now in regards to most postal workers taking a pay cut. Well thats not true the vast majority will see a rise."

Who has said that most postal workers will be taking a pay cut?

Thanks for bringing it up though, we have all taken a pay cut this year because of the pay freeze. If inflation is higher than 6.9 per cent for the period from April 2009 to April 2013 we will be taking a pay cut.

Wrong again the review is in their if there is an increase in inflation. You said delivery staff will take a pay cut and I said the vast majority of delivery staff will not. There are 99500 delivery . The average door 2 door is 2.1 ad it is not paid at christmas or on leave periods or sick leave. Yet since this deal has been concluded I have yet to speak to anyone who does not do door to door 52 weeks per year.

So the the average door 2 door is 2.1. So everyone who currently does more than 2.1 d2d items will be worse off. Yes or no?

The Truth,

We are setting a worrying precedent by allowing CWU members to vote for a minority to take a pay cut. It is not that much of a step away from having union sanctioned institutional bullying whereby a minority of workers do the majority of the work so that the majority can have cushy numbers. This already happens in my workplace. The union is meant to safeguard the terms and conditions of all of its members, not just the majority.

My agenda is that I want the union to do what we pay it to do. I have the ability to help wronged postal workers draft grievances. I do this because I think it is a good way to spend some of my own time. I take home about £300 a week, how much are you on?

We might not do D2D 52 weeks a year now, but will be expected to if this agreement goes through. So our losses would be even more than if we just kept the same system for D2D.
If the average of D2D is 2.1 then will those area's currently getting less than 2 items per week be getting more. Or will the customers who are withdrawing from these area's because of poor performance, continue to withdraw. This means that those other areas who already do 3 will have to do more when the cap is lifted but will have to share the financial benefits with areas where they are losing contracts due to poor performance. so those who are doing the job properly get subsidised by the hard working majority.
Then again that's if you believe the figures in the CWU's presentation. My Office is in an are coloured red but I can guarantee that we get 3 D2D 75% to 80% of the time. So I'm not so impressed with the spin surrounding this agreement.
