How many days for looking after child in emergency?

Post by postghost »

Is this at managers discretion, or is there a wider scope for taking time time off in accordance with the law / employee rights etc?

Family emergency and I had to take 3 days off, but manager has advised it will lead to an attendance stage being triggered.

I noted somewhere that RM "would allow suitable time to make alternative arrangements for child care" etc, but obviously managers understanding of suitable time varies a great deal from others. :chuckle

Any help appreciated.

Fo r reasons that will make me known if I say exactly what happened my my child( 16 at the time) I wont put down what happened but it was very serious that resulted a hospital stay for him,that lasted nearly 8 weeks.My very nice dim would not let me take anytime off leave or special and wouldnt even let me start at 5am so I could get to the hospital for afternoon visting.Needless to say I had to go to evening which resulted in a 60 mile round trip to do so.All I ever got from him was Its not my problem.I did take a week off sick in the time he was in hospital with stress only to be told on my return to work that stress was a load of bollocks and I took the time off because I couldnt get my way! Nice to know that about the only time hes been right :Very Happy

Fisrt of all I wish to express my whole hearted commiserations regarding your personal family unjust situation at the moment.
I can say however that Royal Mail do recognise the seriousness relating to family problems and have indroduced the family friendly scheme, how exactly your dom interprets this as an attendance stage is beyond belief. Therefore my understanding of this is "you can have time off for family reasons only known to you, your dom and unit rep, attendance structure change can be accommedated"
I suggest phoning RM's Help line who will and can guide your dom.
Normally I would suggest a good punch in the mouth to the manager and tell them that you curse all there family for generations with Syphilis. However fortunatlely I have not had to enjour the torment of my child becoming seriously ill and can not even imagine what pressure you are under.
I therefore suggest a good talk with welfare 08006888777

No it wont. The law allows you to take a reasonable amount of time off to deal with family emergencies without being penalised for it. Unfortunately the law doesn't define reasonable, but there is no way it will trigger an attendance stage.

If you need some sensible advice then go to the government website to find out your rights, specifically, http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/parents/mon ... g_10026555" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

if he puts you down as special leave it shouldnt trigger a stage, if he just put you as absent then it will but he shouldnt issue you this, you are allowed to take time off for emergencies for your child or anyone who is dependant on you. However weather or not you are paid for this time off is up to the dom. This is law he should at the very least have given you special leave c which is unpaid. Do not let him issue you a stage tell him its not a sickness and he shouldnt put it down as a sickness abesnce, also get your union rep involved and if he is not about then ring an area rep.
