Van duties

Hi. We had a meeting this morning with one of our area reps from South East London, and he was telling us we will be going into this van sharing after xmas. he seemed to think it was a good scheme and he did say he would answer any questions we had, but he didn't have many answers right now, I did ask if this was going to cost us jobs from our office, I am sure I have seen somewhere that it's something like 3 walk's done by 2 people in 1 van. I think he thought I was looking at getting EVR but I wanted to know how many duties he thought we might lose. Does anyone have any more info thanks.

Puzzled ? here there are no guidelines in place yet for van share an area rep would know this ,so im puzzled why hes relayed this info to you.

Is V/S part of the on going talks so both R/M and the CWU can agree the guidelines on V/S has he had a tip off from some one in the no.

Ive heard the same mate 3 walks between two men they do all the packets regs etc.

What effect is this going to have on the present driving duties.

To be far to the rep he did say the duties would need to be sorted out. But he gave the impression that this was a good thing and that he would welcome van sharing into his office. Not to sure the lads in my office will stand still for 3 walks being rolled into 2 though. after the meeting it seemed to me most of the people in my office didn't really want this.

We've been told that with this new van sharing idea and with it the park and loop idea that we'll have to use small fold away trolleys from the van and not shoulder bags - the theory behind it being to take all weight off the shoulder.

Can anyone confirm whether they can make you use one these trolleys instead of one of those new smaller shoulder bags?

It is no secret that the basic idea of van sharing and longer delivery spans has already been agreed.
This was relayed to me by a divisional rep.
However many of the details are still being discussed especially pegasus/geo-route.
If and it's a big if there is an agreement on geo-route this will be used to plot the deliveries.
Simply bolting two or three deliveries together would not work as the duty must be plotted to make best use of the van and two drivers.
This will require a full office revision which will include present driving duties.

Yes - Royal Mail believe that with more mech mail (85% at present) and Walk Sequencing less time will be spent on IPS and prep and they are hoping this will be covered by outdoor work.

I have to say that from what I'm seeing here, van share isn't all it's being cracked up to be by our rep. If they do want 3 walks into 2 then a lot of us will be out of work or at the very least on shorter hours, I dont think the lads where I am will thank the union if we are doing longer walks and they put some of us out of work.
We have gone through a lot at my place in the last 6 months and I have to be honest and say this van sharing doesn't lookto be a step forwards.

I gather when we get walk sequenced mail we'll still have 3.5hr deliveries but the FTers [me] will be throwing 2 or 3 rounds off for PTers.

Just how out of touch is the CWU. Is this what we striked for, so the union could ride rough shod over us.

It looks as though we'll be getting this in our area as well, but I was under the impression that it was 2 jobs per van, including pkts, reg's etc, still not sure in how many places that would work. I suppose when the WS machines come in, then they might be able to get a way with more per van, as there should very little IPS.
I believe a lot of us doing full time at the moment, will become a endangered speices, in fact I can see RM trying to have no more than 30 hr contracts.
