the inequality of walks

Post by not me »

okay so i wasnt on my usual duty today
i was on a duty i have done before but not much

so on Saturday the duty i was on and the duty i was on today were streamed (2nd class,DSA & mailsort) plus a bag of packets left
the duty i streamed had over 2 and a half trays of stream
the one i was on today had one tray of streamed

my normal duty is 3.5 hours+ on a normal day,i did the other duty today with Saturdays mail in 3 hours!!
i know walks are never going to be even but the sheer difference is staggering especially since our duties are all 3.5 hours  :hmmmm according to georoute
if i was on my normal duty that i know it would have been 4 hours easy with all the streamed mail
i think the difference in walks pisses me off more than anything.when you are doing the job right and struggling its no wonder some manage fine with a walk thats a good % smaller/lighter/easier

This is the problem with pegasus/georoute. It can work things out geographically but it doesn't take into account the disparity in the amount of mail each walk gets. When we had some leeway you could mostly get round this problem - now we are working strictly to time we don't have that luxury. So RM have got themselves one hell of a problem to solve and it won't be done by telling us we aren't working fast enough or by their usual bullying tactics.

It's about time our "planners" started to earn their keep.

All offices will be the same - it's extremely difficult to get walks even, especially when managers think computers and them know better than the staff that do them every day.

I did a 1/4 of a walk on a Tuesday a few months ago and it took 55 mins with 2 bags of mail. I did a third of another not long after and it took 35 minutes. The guy on the second walk finishes later than the guy on the first because he's hardly at his frame in a morning!

Or the disparity between people & the way they do the job (i.e. those that leg it round & come in early etc & those that just do the job as it should be)

This is why especially at the moment reps should be involved with plotting walks.

What we did in our office was get every walk holder in and ask them about there walks Terrain, drop points,Flats etc.

The both of us then sat down with the planner and plotted all the walks in our office taking into account the info we received from the chaps.

The feed back we are receiving from the lads is positive at present , but leave it to R/M to put the walks through geo-route and your asking for trouble.

To be honest after having an insight into how it works so to speak never will all walks be equal. There are a few restricitons on the geo-route system that you can not by-pass and because of this it is flawed.

agreed, though as i said to a manager today
i'm the same postie on the two duties,so either im massively slower on one, massively quicker on one or they are nowhere near the same size :so there

Georoute as far as I'm aware doesn't consider steps, gates, inclines/declines accurately, knocking on people's doors for packets/specials/signed fors, writing 739's etc etc etc. If it does someone please say I'm wrong.

It does consider all of the things you mentioned above as long as the Geo-router is actually informed about them. This is why every duty holder should have input about the changes before Geo-route is run.

The "Knocking on peoples doors" is included as a % of total address points this is the "attendance rate" as opposed to the "call rate"

No the above is the ideal situation - Royal Mail tend to use Pegasus to save hours rather than "re-align walks" or optimize delivery, which kind of ruins the idea behind it.

Everyone walks at a different pace therefore walks will never, ever be equal.

If it was that simple everyone would have say 550 calls, no more, no less.

Custard, you sound like a reserve or float, in which case you only cover either duty 1 in 6 or during A/L.

Maybe the other guys on the duties finish in or around the same time.

no i hold a duty which i stream & cut on a daily basis to finish for my time
when this other walk is free i get moved to that.
basically management admit its an easier walk and it allows me to finish on my time without streaming/cutting
the walk i hold is known as a s**t walk but its not the only one by far

since i joined(over a year) i have done nearly all the walks in my office bar 10.
I can honestly say that some walks are easily done within 3.30 mns while others can take nearly 4.30 to complete.
as soon as the walks are on a level playing field the better for all.

That wouldn't work either. What about Detached, Semi Detached, Terraced, Maisonettes, flats, doors on front/side/back, steep hills, rurals, areas that are much heavier mailwise etc etc.

The easiest walk i've ever done had over 1000 drops and took less than 90 mins everyday.
