The good & the bad at RM

Post by TomW »

Hi, I'm a student at Warwick Business School studying the "Human Relations Management" (bullshit phrase, basically the personel management) of Royal Mail. Have just had something of a trawl through this website (and others) and can tell that there is a lot of anger at the way Royal Mail has changed over the last few years. Possible future changes seem equally unpopular.

I was wondering what changes you have seen in the way RM treats its employees in the past five years and how they have affected your view of the job and ability to do it. Have any changes had a positive effect on productivity and realiability? Or have most changes dampened morale? It the RM succeeding in implimenting new technology? Is the 2007 Pay and Modernisation Agreement a fair one or are other things (such as pensions) a more pressing worry? Any views are welcom.

Sorry for being an offcomer to the site but its really useful to hear from people within RM, otherwise I have to rely on newspaper articles, RM propaganda and CWU literature. I don't trust these to provide a balanced selection of views from real employees. (Your views will help guide my research, and I won't quote anyone unless you would like me to).

Cheers :hmmmm

Tom, you could start by walking for 4 to 5 hours with a clued in postman (you will have to discern if he is ) by the end you should get a lot of information. Hope that helps.

What sort of icing would you like when you're done?

Tom, if you could blag a bit of time off work the best thing you can do is get a job as a casual or temp contract postie - in an undercover manner.....just borrow someone's identity ( for their NI number - might be best if they are out of the country / expat....but do with what you can get ), then you will have 4 weeks at the most pressured time of the year to see what we put up with on a daily basis ( and don't reveal your identity to ANYONE )

N.B. I do not know what the legal implications of those actions might be - but if journos can do it, why not you? If you can't do it for Christmas, then get in and do it asap!
I don't suppose your mouth bleeds every 28 days, does it?

Cheers for the responses. If only I had the time to shadow someone's daily routine or work undercover I would! However, from what I'm gathering, workloads are not of a fair size at all. But does this worry you more than the issues of job losses, pension safety and possible privatisation?
