House Address Law 1865

Watching "Buy or not to buy" today, one of the presenters said: In 1865, Parliament passed a Law demanding Every house to have a number, as many were copying the Nob's with the use of house names only.
IS THIS TRUE??? ( God, I hope it is...)

It would solve the problems in Welsh villages where there are 2,3 or 4 houses with the same or very similar names. ( This is OK for Welsh speaking older posties, but for reliefs/part timers doing Cut offs or covering sickness, leave days, it's a bloody nightmare!)
There are many houses with no name, number or any other identifying marks. ( Yeah, I know we're "supposed" to get 3 days Training on each round, but I think we all live in the real world, where only lip-service is paid to this.)

I assume other English/Scottish areas have a similar problem? So, what's the deal, are ALL house supposed to have a number, legally?

I think the legal side is that a property has to have the name or number of it in clear view for people to see. But ive never known it being enforced. Theres loads of farms and houses round us that arnt clearly marked. then they wonder why the post is wrong.

Makes my blood boil when you get to a house and there's a £400,000 house sat there and no plastic £2 numbers anywhere to be seen. You know there's a good chance if you missdeliver these type of people will be the first on the phone complaining when they get wrong mail!

When i am doing absorbtion on a strange round and make a misdelivery its nearly always a house without a number. Its a real wind up

I was watching Real Rescues yesterday morning and the emergency services in that area were promoting displaying numbers/house names because they could'nt find some of the addresses. As dave said I can't believe people spend 1000's on the house and can't be arsed to spend a couple of quid putting a door number up Perhaps a D2D should be produced by RM and the emergency services and put through un-numbered/named houses. I bet unnumbered addresses are the 1st to moan about misdelivered mail.

Yep, someone else in work mentioned the Emergency Services aspect. But if they get mis-deliveries or their house burns down, of course, it's not THEIR fault!

A bit of cardboard stuck with tape to the window with a number written on would do. ( I've even had the situation where I'm delivering to a road, all the first houses are numbered, then you get to a few - which are usually detached - and you ask it this is number 17 or something, and the reply is, "Oh, we don't have a number..
Well, YES, YOU DO, but because your such Snob's, you don't wont to be linked to the oiks further down the road!!!)

Anyway, I'll look into it further, as it would make many peoples work much easier, effective and efficient.
Isn't this what RM want, quicker, faster, less-hassle deliveries?
