Im after your honest opinion on a situation that happened between myself and one of our drivers earlier on today. I do apologies for this post being so long i usually try to keep my short and sweet but im that PISSED OFF with what has happened its rather long SORRY.

Im a local rep as some of you may be aware on this site and what has happened today is i now find myself questioning whether i am fit enough to be our office rep.
Me and my opo are shortly coming up to our first year as reps and what we have had to deal with in this first year has been horrendous for any new reps especially ones that have not been trained up yet.

We had by Executive Action 5 walks and a driving duty removed from our office back in August,which lead to us taking 4 days Un-offical action.
Since this has happened our office has collasped which has cost R/M some where in the region a £200 thousand pound over spend. This over spend is due to the use of casual staff since august and to this day we still have at least half a dozen working in our office. There was also the cost of extra vans ,the use of drafting in managers from all over the North West,O/T being booked and the re-instatement on a temporary basis of nights which was also on O/T.

The morale of our office is non-existent the heart and soul has been well and truly ripped out of it by R/M. Gone are the days when it was like a nut house and it was this that got you through your indooor working day,People come in every day with glum looking faces dragging on the floor.

Now we have a bit of light at the end of the tunnel R/M have done a bit of a u-turn and have chosen to put walks back into our office through the efforts of me and my opo and through the lads on the shop floor doing the job properly for once. They have chosen to except the proposal we originally put to them before Exe-Action ,and at present me and my opo are re-plotting walks. If any of you here have ever re-plotted walks you will know how stressful it is,we are also re-doing the opals.

So today i was asked by my DOM to take some bags down to a walk men that had rung up at 12.45 now im not a driver but have been in the past so i said yes ( FOOLISHLY) loaded up the van with 5 bags ,got a comment passed to me teling me i was wrong doing this as its a drivers job. Any way a driver comes through the gates in his van that at present is on a dda duty and can not lift bags, so i asked him to driver the van i would do the lugging of them which he did. Got to the drop point and theres a regular driver on collection he asked what i was doing told him and he said i was out of order .Little did he know that i had 3 discussons with a DSM earlier on pointing out the drivers work load and what measures he was going to put in place to make there working day more manageable. When i gets back the office here is the driver walking past me asking for the number of the area rep so i asked him what he wanted it for .

He said that he wanted to ring him and pull out the Union because of my actions so i gave him it and told him if he wanted i would ring for him.
Then all hell broke lose as i tried to explain myself again to him and i also informed him of the efforts i had gone to today on behalf of all drivers in the office.
By this time one dsm and 2 doms are on the shop floor trying to douse the flames but to no avail then as im walking away i hear him say to my opo "HE DOESNT LIKE IT DOES HE" .
This comment made me pop completely i was restrained by a dom as i shouted to him what did he mean by his comment which he said nothink but stood there all cocky with a smug look on his face. It was me that was threatened with suspension not him,Its me that has to fight for everythink in our office not him its me putting my bolloxs on the line because ive got a big mouth and i believe in fighting for whats rite and i refuse to be bullied. No other postie in our office wanted to do the reps job and still dont its me whos the tit for doing it.

So chaps you lot are my judge,juror and executioner am i fit to rep .Tomorrow i have a meeting at the branch and sadly due to this incident i am contemplating jacking it in.
Oh yeah one last thing when i first took ups the reps job this same person said in fron of evryone that as my union rep he had no faith in me.Then during our 4 days un-offical action he approached me and apologised for that comment whick i told i accepted his apology and thanked him for it so now hes stabbed me in the back twice.

as a rep you can't be all thing's to all men. you have to do what you think is right for the majority. you're alway's going to get the one's that will look for fault in everything you do. do what our old rep from year's ago was found of doing. tell him to piss off or put up or shut up.

I was a Rep and it got to much and I resigned. Best thing I did and now I just fight my own battles.

Well i did ask him if he wanted to stand for the reps job but he turned his back on me.

And i think the best thing would be to resign the position and just fight my own battles life would be a lot easier i know that.

But then R/M will have a free hand over our office and they will do as the please confusion confusion confusion

No way...don't jack it in cos of one mouthpiece,if possible....hold a members meeting and update them on the progress YOU an your OPPO have made...!! The decent members in your office will see the benefits of your negotiations and should far outwiegh 'the gub'..!! All us reps have bad days ....some worse than others..!! Don't let one man bring you down....show him and everyone else that you are the bigger man...!!!! Good luck......

It is a truism to say that as reps we are not only in battle with the employer but also with some of oyr own members. It is interesting to note that while you and your oppo have been acting in the best interests of all members in your unit this numpty was only interested in his own position. I can't see that you have done anything wrong and can imagine the embarassment that he chinned you in front of RM managers.

As Hess rightly says call a members meeting and put it to them, let them decide. Sometimes all we need is for someone to reassure us that we are doing our best in very difficult circumstances.

Monkey I can tell by this post and others in the past that you are passionate about you repping which is a good thing as I cant see how you can do a good job if you don’t care. Ive seen many reps come and go and they all have said its a thankless job as you simply cannot please everyone all of the time.
A bloody big WELL DONE for getting duties put back in its a great achievement and you should be proud of that.

As far as the incident of the dropping of bags I really cant see what the big deal is, not really in the scheme of things lately. It sounds like this bloke enjoys a good argument for the sake of it and knows he can get you going because he’s had a pop at you before.
I know its not always easy but your going to have to try to keep a lid on that temper as you really don’t want to find yourself on a warning or worse for the sake of a wind up merchant like him.

I think if you can swallow your pride and settle your differences with the guy (you don’t have to like him) and try to forget it. As you say if he thinks it so easy than he’s welcome to have a go a being a rep but somehow his sort never do.

I took the easy way out and jacked it in after a short time, not because of the bosses but because of the members, its all moan moan moan, just not worth the hassle. So its really all down to you whether you quit or not.

Cheers for the support lads looks like this is somethink i shall sleep on and have a word with my area rep tomorrow at the branch.

You are rite though i do have to keep a lid on my temper but members do not realise the stresses a rep at any level is under at present.

I shall try to keep a lid on it if i chose to stay and i shall go about my business in a different way and express my feelings in a better manner.

I would be quite happy to pay for my office rep I think they should get paid. I think if everybody put in 50p each week for him it would be worthwhile.
