Royal Mail's agreement set to turn members against their own

Post by BarryFromEastenders »

How I see it...

RM have presented an agreement on nothing really other than talks as zilch is set in stone, admittedly it does cover many areas that needed addressing. It’s probably enough to get the TUC to recommend in favour, so the CWU could hardly pull away from it or else RM would have a field day in the media especially if the agreement was backed by the TUC.

So the CWU’s hand may have been forced slightly.

RM play this card as they know the majority of the members ain’t gonna be very happy having lost money hand over fist for an agreement that agrees very little. RM know members will start to turn their back on the Union and refuse to strike again as they feel they’ve been sold down the river.

Obviously many members will spout they won’t support the fight no more but will come round however a percentage will turn their back on the Union over this for good, so if we had say 15% of all posties strikebreaking last time come the next time (that will inevitably happen as RM will make sure it will happen) you may see 35% strikebreaking, which is getting damn close to the 50% mark, and once it tips over that it’s all over.

I genuinely think RM are playing us all from top to bottom and theirs gonna be f**k all we can do about it… they are turning members on their own Union.

It’s one big game plan to destroy the Union from the work place, it’s as simple as that!

The sad thing is we are being played by RM and playing straight into their hands!

Any thoughts?

Whatever conclusions are drawn in the negotiations over the coming days/weeks there will be some sort of agreement reached. That agreement still needs to go before the membership as a whole to be endorsed. Posties will not forget how they have been treated this year by both its own leadership and that of RM. Once again Unit Reps, the length and breadth of the country, will need to pick themselves up, dirty their hands once again and motivate their unit members to vote against any agreement that does not meet the aspirations that were balloted on, whether local or national.

While the CWU leadership have dithered and dallied for months now, a huge vote of thanks to Unit Reps for their support and tenacity over that period. The CWU leadership owe them, and the membership, not to falter in these negotiations and bow to pressure, political or otherwise, in persuance of an agreement that is right and fair for members.

Members need to be as united after IA just as much as during. It's true that some will turn their back on the Union - THAT plays into RM's hands and it's exactly the reason why we need to remain united and strong as a Union.

Without a strong Union, RM would have brought in each and every change without a care in the world.

sometimes change is a good thing, although in this situation the changes RM want to make are silly.

I genuinely think RM are playing us all from top to bottom and theirs gonna be f**k all we can do about it… they are turning members on their own Union.
Don't forget, the PEC approved this. It wasn't wholly RM's decision.

As a local rep I will be urging my members to read carefully, think and consider then cast their vote according to their genuinely held belief as to yes or no. Turnout is the most important factor so whatever the ouctcome of the vote it has a strong manadate from the membership. All this one third yes one third no and one third dont vote crap has to stop.

I dont belive in telling people how to vote but i belive in telling them to vote. If they ask me how im voting I will tell them

How about no recomendations from the PEC down to local reps? Explain it to the mbrs but let them make up their own mind using their own free will!

what you have been given is the 2007 pay/mod agreement to go all over again with the exact same tools to deal with it,
these tools were of course all RMs,so by the time this buisness is done you will end up with exactly the same crock of
sh,,t you already have.

Alas, on past experience, I fear that if there is a sufficient cash 'bung' in the deal, many will do like they did in 2007: either not vote at all  or, worse, vote to accept the deal because there will be no point striking after Christmas. RM will just laugh and say "Strike ? At that time of year ? Who gives a toss ?" And after losing so much pay already for very little if any progress, some of my colleagues will agree and quietly let the agreement go through
