I have just been accepted as a postman, i had my interview last thursday where they said i had passed my assesment and expect a job offer in a few weeks after they have done some checks, all i could get was a part time position with 20 hours a week, i have a few questions i hope you may be able to help me with.. 1. do you know what these checks are that they are doing at the moment?.. 2. what would be my basic take home pay on those hours and 3. do you think there would be much chance of overtime to bump my hours up? im based in southampton.

Sorry to say but this is a very difficult time for you to be joining RM.I'm sure you will get plenty of OT but wether you will want it after a couple of weeks time will tell. Have you joined the union yet? If not make contact with you DO rep ASAP and get yourself covered for most issues you will face.

i got a call today from royal mail to ask my permission to do security checks on me, they said it would take about 2 weeks and then i will have my induction, as im having an induction does that deffinitely mean i have the job and how long is the induction?.. also would i start the day after my induction? its just that i have to give my current employer 1 weeks notice. any help would be greatly appreciated..

if you haven't got a criminal record, or if it is spent ( 5 years I think ) then it sounds like you've got the job. The induction lasts about 6 hours but you will be paid for this as this is classed as your starting day...But as you say you have to give your current employer 1 weeks notice, I would think long and hard about this seeing that you have a job already I personally would stick with that... good luck. :cfo :mfo
You should start in the delivery office on the tuesday and will follow a postie around for 3 days before going out by yourself. You won't be expected to be up to speed for a good 4weeks or more so you should get OT everyday. Ultimately you should be comming in to your mail all ready but that is actually rare so you will probablly end up geting some of it ready yourself meaning you will be going out later and therefore will end up need to claim OT on 2 or 3 days per week if not more. If you are happy to deliver more after your round is finished you should be offered that after 4weeks or so and you could do an extra 1hr or so per day.

yeah be mindful that you will be on a temporary contract? The company may well get shot of you 6months down the line and that is quite likely the way things are going.
moggymoz.. the job im doing now i oonly have a contract till christmas, theres no guarantee they will offer me another one after so i had to try and cover myself..

That's good, i heard all new staff were temp. But do remember there is a 6month probation before which if they have too many they can let you go on performance issues. In other words don't rely on this job till 6months are past and you have full employee rights.
