Convince me it's right
I know this will go down about as well as a ballon full of sh it but I want everybody to 'in their own words' to convince me that the strikes are good for us all.
I'm not going into work, don't worry there, but at the back of my mind I can't help feeling that the strikes are doing nothing for us,
Where I work it isn't all bad.
Managers are a bit crap but there is no sign of bullying, if you can't complete you drop.......easy
There is no public support due to the thousands unemployed and we have had our start times changed, walks sequenced job and knock finished, all changes went through with a bit of moaning and groaning at first but then things carry on as usual. Most in my d.o. take a break and start and finish on time, some take overtime but they are happy to do this.
I'm a quite person by nature and I've seen many changes in the company in my time here, I am suprised by the amount of people at my d.o. (oop north) that won't be striking because they feel they have implemented all the changes required and understand that changes are made to a business trying to compete in todays society.
And lets be fair folks, the pay isn't all bad, it's an unskilled job at the end of the day, I have done much more work for much less pay previousley. I came into this job after been an unsilled labourer on a site
Like I said, don't jump on me with abuse, I'm only speaking my mind here, I will strike with the rest but not sure I'm fully aware what I hope to gain from it.
I would like to keep this post as informative as possible without any mention of strike breakers or the such, just give me the facts and I'll sleep easy lol
Thanks and I look forward to your replys

Thanks for the reply, Could you elaborate a little bit
What exactly is happening? What will change from striking?
I'm just wanting facts mate, I know it's a crap job but all jobs are crap when you are working for an organisation determined to make a profit.
Don't take this as an anti strike thread, it's not, I'm just wondering out loud

Re: Convince me it's right
Fair arguement .... so far!
Most offices were like yours untill they come back and want more, then more and when you think they can't take anymore out they come back again!
That's when the bullying starts...... just a word in your ear to start with.... then the threat that it will have to go down the official line.... then before you know it your offices are just like the rest!
Guy's taken off pay for 8 hours which they have already worked, because they can't finish the work on time and can't do O.T because picking the kids up from school is more important to them than the bonus of the management!
Don't fall for the old line we've finished our implementation of modernisation plans because as Mr Higson said, we have finished implementing our modernisation plans for 2009!
Come Jan 2010, well that's a different matter as they will start again in the offices that they haven't destroyed and by that time you may not have the strength in the union to protect you if we lose this battle!

I find it hard to believe that even at this late stage people still have doubts about this dispute, put in simple terms if we lose this fight you will be lucky to have a job.
The changes that your people had a moan about this year will be tenfold next year and every year until RM reaches the Dutch Model of a mostly part time workforce, there will be no negotiation or input from the staff or union just diktat from an out of control employer, and your terms and conditions of employment will be eroded to such a degree that the job will no longer be worth having.
We are fighting for our lives and jobs a fight we simply cannot afford to lose at any cost if we want a say in our future.

And for the unlucky one's and there will be who face mail centre closures etc, without a strong union how much do you think the redundancy package will be

Re: Convince me it's right
Well in all honesty for me it is not the bullying, harrassment, new working practices or lack of vision - it is the right to be represented in the workplace by my chosen represntative, which happens to be the CWU. I would urge everyone to imagine a workplace where the union is no longer able to represent you at all.

Re: Convince me it's right
Just ask your Line Manager/DIM what percentage saving they are being asked to make in readiness for April 2010. If they say they are not aware they are being somewhat economical with the truth. Our DO is already targeted for a further 140-hour reduction on top of the 140-hours lost since April 2009, and that is before any national action is taken! That will quite literally mean 3 duties will need to be absorbed - any 'spare' hours were lost in previous year's budget. Any new staff taken on at DOs will be offered 25-hour contracts maximum according to my DIM.
Does anyone need further evidence as to why a positive resolution to this dispute is so important for the long-term future of members?
Welcome to RM's vision of a modernised postal service ...

And although it's just one small part of the whole equation, would you be happy to deliver D2D's for nothing, as described in the leaked document?
That one thing alone, regardless of what's happening in any office, should be enough for every postie to strike. That's unless you'd like to give RM £1000 a year.

Re: Convince me it's right
The issues surrounding this strike are so complex. I am in a similar position as whitetrash. My office runs ok, no bullying etc.. The workload is high after all the changes, but anyone who has trouble with their work seems to get help or paid ot. Now, many people in our office are going in to work on friday, saying that they are not going to lose money because some offices in the country won't cooperate and implement the pay and mod agreement, with the main caveat that all paid hours will be worked at an agreed standard.
Now the question is this, do we believe the management argument, mainly that some offices are full of posties unwilling to work their paid hours at standard, who have caused a strike from the bottom up? Or, that some offices have been genuinely over stretched and that managers in these offices, desperate for their bonuses, have resorted to intimidating the workforce in order to achieve their budgets?
The first argument is very difficult to ascertain the truth of.
The second of these is much more worrying as it will definately get to everyone, and cause a miserable working environment.
I have to play safe with this one, the second argument is not a possiblity we can tolerate. Therefore I support the union regarding this issue..
Any more feedback?

Re: Convince me it's right
6 walks and a driving duty taken out of our office by way of EXEC Action making the office now totally un-workable.
Performance standards test used on people to frighten them to work faster by way of issuing formal letters. Although in these tests they do not include D2DS ,deads, re-directions packets, regs and weighing of bags but they should be including them this results in unrealistic times we should be out the office and on delivery.
Stage warnings getting issued to people who were off with life threating illnesses.
Harrassing people whilst on long term sick with stress related issues by ways of constantly ringing them.
Giving you the One minute IPS test stood right on your shoulder with a stop watch and clip board there that close you can feel there breath on your neck.
Not allowing you personnel phone calls or to have a drink whilst on the ips.
Talking to you like your dog s**t on there shoe.
Not honouring any agreements.
Are about to enforce longer delivery spans on us change our start/finish times.
Decided to give us all a pay freeze whilst giving themselves luvvly jubbly bonuses.
Making un-realistic office savings year in year out
I think that should be suffiecent for now. Thank your lucky stars this hasnt come to your office yet my friend but believe you me it will.
Before i end actullay Bullying, harrassing and intimdation by R/M on a daily basis

Hi Whitetrash I hear what you' saying but RM have not finished with us yet..... even though your office feel they have implemented ALL the changes requiredwhitetrash wrote: that won't be striking because they feel they have implemented all the changes required
this is not the case and I can give you good reasons to convince you!!........
8% savings next year because the mails dropping isn't it ??,
more summer savings, which will probably stay in after the 12 weeks
PT staff,.... how can people live on 25hr contracts
not being paid for delivery of your D2D's......thats nice.....for RM!!... cost people £20- 35 less in their pay packets
later starts,...... not very family friendley when you have to pick the kids up from school
loss of IPS hours though sequencing machines, all ready for the PT workers more savings
Pegasus 2 WORSE then the first version..the list goes on .... hope this helps????
