Just heard that phrase again from a top royal mail nob on bbc news.Makes you wanna throw something at the telly does'nt it?
Knowing the majority are working over everyday for nothing.
I think the industrial action will have a far greater effect than last time purely because we excepted change that resulted in 60,000 job losses over the last few years,there is now no scope whatsoever of clearing mail that has accumulted through strike days.
We just dont have the manpower any more,because we did what we were asked and accepted their change.
Looking forward to seeing the line managers try to manage the backlog from hopefully more than the odd one dayer,lets hit them hard straight off.

Management LOVE this "RM just want you to work the hours you are paid for" I don't think anyone has a problem with that, but let's take a look at the REALITY of what goes on in an office, or at least the one I work in.
We finish early because of the golden carrott 'job and finish' They (management) see this and add more work, so the boys come in earlier, work faster, don't take breaks, run around and finish early. Management see this and say "Ohh you got time to do MORE" so we take on more and still come in early, still rush around and all that jazz.
We're making a rod for our own backs.
Also there are some slimy, no-good, snakey bathplugs in my office that will complain to the manager if you seem to be 'slow'. It's not that you're slow, it's you're not rushing around like a f***ing idiot to get home early. It's like being in infants school "Sir, sir I've sorted in more than him. He's going slow on purpose just so he doesn't have to do more work. Sir, sir, Johnny didn't do his absorption today, but I did. It's not fair. He took 3 1/2 hurs to do his round on purpose. I'm a good boy and run around like a fool and finished by half 12. Arn't I a good boy" I digress.

I agree, the strikes 'should' have a greater effect this time around, especialy in the larger offices. We simply don't have the number of staff members we once did. Also, alot of them are part times and on those lousy 1 hour contracts. Not as many full timers as before.

Excellent response,too true in my office.We've had pretty much all the changes and still people come in early,run around e.t.c.
We have a pt who does two deliveries a day on overtime they are prepped and they bag it up,Run's round the deliveries then does packets in the afternoon.How they manage this ive no idea,but they looked knackered!!

Secondly "work the full hours your paid" etc. Trouble is your typical joe public who works in a white collar office will say "hey i have to work my hours, lazy skiving sods" yes we have heard it time and time again.
However look how the typical office is run. 35 hour week, tea breaks (free tea) an hour for lunch in the pub, more free coffee breaks, followed by a 15 min chat by the photocopier etc etc you get the idea. Yes it is a full day and tiring but its not the same physical 8 hour grind that we do everday in all weathers.

My customers are all very middle class, big houses,merc on the drive etc, dont get me wrong they are very pleasent people to chat with but they will never show support to a strike. So this time around (i accept public support is important to help end the dispute), iam tired of doing 5 hours delivery everyday so i really cant be all that bothered, we can and WILL get by without it.
My family know that i am getting home 2 hours later than i did 2 years ago and a lot more tired and right now thats all that is important to me.

Yeah I agree its total nonsense.
If RM really just wanted you to work the hours you're paid,and no more - i.e coming in at your correct start-time,taking your full break,not using your own car etc - then the whole company would be on its knees within a few weeks.
My office is already starting to creak again with the amount of cut-offs,packets left because drivers have to to do lapsing and the thousands of letters that are "streamed" daily,,and thats with more than half the office cutting corners and rushing around.
So when some faceless RM drone comes out in the newsapers or on the radio with this sort of propoganda,I just have to say they're full of s***.
Whats more I think even they know it.

This time around one dayers are not the direction to take us it has to be a minimum of two dayers for it to have a major impact if talks fail.

To be honest can you see your office DIM changing there ways as i cant reason being they have using there tactics and attitude on us for far to long.

People have absolutely no idea how hard we work, mostly without taking any breaks at all - ask the average office worker to work 7-9 hour days without a single break and they'd be horrified.

I see dozens of council workers/contractors on my walk every day as they are renovating houses, the first sign of rain and they are in the vans. I swear no matter what time I get there the same guys are sat around having a break every day - it seems to be do a bit of work then have a break, repeat all day until it's time to go home! Yeah i'm sure they get the work done, but there's no way on this earth those guys work as hard as I do.

I can see rolling strikes again this time followed by a ban on overtime to prevent the backlog being cleared.

Surely if we strike 1 day per week and work [only] the hours we are payed then the RM managers only have to cope with 1 day out of 6 or 17%. If there is a 10% drop in mail and and mechanisation being rolled out across the country they won't have any problems ... will they?
