Hello troops.

What a nasty situation I find myself in today.

I have only just got the decision made on http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... =1&t=17180" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It took a mere four months before my senior manager issued me with a 'serious warning' which will stay on my record for two years. Glad that it was over I now just get on with the job. Or so I thought.

This 'serious warning' for the above was issued to me on the 16/09/09. Now tomorrow the 23/09/09 I have been invited to attend a formal fact finding interview with my Assistant DOM with reference to a period of events that happened between 14/09/09 and 19/09/09. Waste no time.

I will now try my best to explain what this is in relation to.

In my office I am expected to work 8 hours on a Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. 7 and a half hours on a Tuesday and 8 and a quarter hours on Thursday and Friday. Which all adds up nicely to 40 hours.

I sign in each day at my start time and sign out at whatever time I finish. The time I sign out at varies from day to day. To be honest I don't really take a great deal of notice.

So whenever I have signed out on Monday afternoon I come into work on Tuesday and there is a new sheet and Monday's has been took into the office (and never seen again). I sign out on Tuesday's sheet come in on Wednesday and Tuesday's sheet is gone. And so on. You catch my drift?

I take no notice of what time I sign in or out at usually. There is no display in the office to tell me how many hours I have or haven't worked. Obviously if there is 30 mins overtime on payslip then I know I have worked 40 and a half hours the previous week. If I have a total flat weeks pay then I would take it upon myself to go into the office on the Monday or Tuesday and ask if I owe any hours for the previous week. I have done this regularly. So perhaps the previous week I only worked 39 hours got paid for 40 and still owe them an hour which I have absolutely no issue with and will work up. There is no way of knowing what hours I did or didn't work though.

There is a meaning for all this rambling and I'm getting to it now.

So the week commencing Monday 14/09/09 my day off was in fact the Monday. So my working week was Tuesday 15/09/09 to Saturday 19/09/09.

These are the hours I worked that week-

Tuesday-6 hours 45 mins
Wednesday-8 hours
Thursday-8 hours 25 mins
Friday-8 hours 15 mins
Saturday-8 hours

This totals to 39 hours and 35 mins. Meaning I owed them 35 mins which I was not aware off.

On Saturday 19/09/09 the mail in our office for that day was unbelievable. One of the worse days in over year for our office. No joke. Bulk mailings from several companies on my delivery. Needless to say it was Saturday and I had planned to go meet a few mates and go to a football match. So I couldn't complete the delivery. In our office we have to fill a sheet out explaining why we are leaving a handback of mail. We also have to leave the mail we can't deliver in the office BEFORE we go out on delivery. So I filled out my handback sheet, left my handback of mail and went out on delivery and done my 8 hours work that I'm supposed to do on a Saturday.

The Assistant DOM then asked to have a word (informal) with me on Monday 21/09/09 morning. He took me into the office on my own. He then tells me I owed them 35 mins work from last week but left a handback of mail on Saturday. He informs me that I could of took 35 mins more work out with me to make my hours up. I said to him I didn't know I owed 35 mins work or I wouldn't have knowingly brought attention to myself. He said it was my job to look after what hours I have worked. I said how can I when you keep the signing in/out sheets in the office. He said I should of come in and seen him. I was under a lot of pressure and stress on the Saturday I left the handback and the last thing on my mind was did I or didn't I owe hours.

I now have to attend a formal fact finding interview tomorrow (24/09/09) with my Assistant DOM. My CWU Rep will be there but a fat lot of good he is! His response was 'We'll have to let this run it's course'. Absolutely no fight! He's bloody scared to tread on their toes!

Surely it was managers responsibilty to inform me I owed 35 mins work when I asked for and left the handback sheet back into the office? I was totally unaware. This has happened a week just after receiving a 'serious warning' for another matter. So I dunno what to do, think or say. Has this assistant DOM got it in for me? Am I in the wrong?

I no all the BO**OCKS about working your paid hours but some how this seems slightly different......

In what way does this seem slightly different mate?

Being totally honest I would of probably had no issue making up the 35mins I owed on the Saturday. My issue is with my Assistant DOM not letting me know I owed the 35 mins. Entrapment perhaps?

Now I know when I say to my Assistant DOM tomorrow that he should of informed me that I owed the 35 mins, he's gonna reply with something like 'It's your responsibility to know what you have and haven't work. I have over 100 people in this office and can't keep track of all the hours each and everyone of them work don't work'.

I think you'll find that any flexing is to be done in the same week, and even thats difficult for them to get done, because come the W/E they normally owe you.
I'd do as others have said either keep a record yourself, this is where the CWU diary comes in handy, or better yet, do what some of blokes do, fill out your sheet and then get it photocopied, I assume you've a photocopier in the office.
We've just started to use a new time sheet, whereby we fill in start, IPS start, IPS finish, del start and del end, when it's filled in we get either a DOM on PHG to sign it, so get it signed either the official sheet or your own, job done.
Must admit it does sound as you're being bullied and harrassed, so I would start keeping a record of everything that happens in the day.

Yes it is your responsabilty if you have access to the time sheets but you dont. Its slightly different or what i meant was we are all aware we have to work our paid hours what we are not aware of is that we have to keep track of our hours nar bolloxs m8 its your Asst DOMS job to inform you that you owe them time they are the ones with the time sheets. This is the exact reason im putting in a letter tomorrow asking my DIM DOM to install a clocking on/off machine then there is an accurate reading of everyones attendance pattens. The union aint going to put up with this trumped up charge m8 if i were you i would be furious.

I am furious mate. Very furious. Bearing in mind the ink isn't even dry on the 'serious warning' I got for a previous issue. My Union Rep has said were just gonna have to let this run it's course again. Where's the fight?! Would any other Union Reps take this view? During all my interviews for which I got the 'serious warning' I was very calm and reserved. I accepted a degree of responsiblity in that my performance could be better. However I think all guns will be blazing! I really don't think I can accept ANY responsibility whatsoever for this fiasco.

Myself and several of the lads have suggested on the signing in/out sheets a running tally of the hours worked. So if I work 7 hours on a Monday when I sign in on a Tuesday I'll see a column showing 'total hours worked 7'. Then if i work 8 hours 10 mins on the Tuesday when I sign in on Wednesday my 'total hours worked' column would read 15 hours 10 mins. And so forth. That way when it comes to signing in on a Saturday I know what I have already worked for the week. Needless to say though this proposal was rejected. Wonder why? Again the word entrapment springs to mind?

Just curious,do you sign back in at the end of the day?Not that it matters.

There is no banking hours,period!!
Flexing is voluntary,there is nothing in any agreement that says that if you hapen to finish early one day you have to bank hours and make it up another day/week!

The whole thing is bollox,your rep needs to get on to area about this,in fact he should be in the managers office telling him what for!

Matey please read this carefully. There is a sacred folder in the managers office with every posties name in it. This folder has the the ACTUAL total hours worked by each and everyone of us. This folder goes back as far as 5-6 months. Some guys owe maybe 10, 11, 12 hours and maybe even higher and have absolutely no idea they even owe them. I don't wanna be owing them hours. Especially not anything above 1 hour. For them to come round to me some day and say you owe us X amount of hours when are you gonna work them up? NO WAY SIR!
