How would you run Royal Mail

Running a business is a hard thing, I read a lot of negative and positive things on this forum, so how would you run Royal Mail. Maybe Royal Mail management and CWU officials will read all your comments and take what we on the shop floor have to say seriously

Get the early starts back again i think thats were all the problems lie postmen/women love getting finished around lunch time. Its the way it should be for us and the public getting there post early.

Easy - allow an outside agency in every so often to independently measure productivity and one that both the Union and business can agree to.

Allow Local managers to Manage locally.

No more arbitrary cuts year on year - yes if total traffic is down (as measured by the method described above) then reduce the budget and hours, but only by an agreed and robust formula.

If savings have to made or efficiencies introduced then the local work force must have input and must be rewarded if savings are made of budgets reduced.

Agreements both local and national must be audited by an independent company and must be adhered to. However, I think changes can and must be made more quickly than at present - this is the only criticism I have of the Union in that sometimes then can drag out disagreements locally (over the whole country) and this must frustrate people if their is a perceived benefit to members.

Reduce the working week for full timers to 35 hours - this would allow RM to make a savings on indoor hours which will be needed when sequencing starts working, but allow the total time on delivery to stay at 3.5 hours.

I'm convinced the biggest problem we have as a business is that we're simply not charging our customers enough for the service we provide.

I know people who work in the advertising/marketing sector and they've said that some mail-shots, particularly those offering various financial services require as little as 1% response and uptake from the recipients in order to make a profit!

Added to this that we're delivering downstream access for pennies per item, surely we can charge more?

Its not like our business customers can go elsewhere if we increase our charges, who else out there has the means or will to mass-deliver their catalogues full of over-priced tat?

RM can't charge more for DSA or stamps, they charge what Postcomm says they can.

Postcomm is the reason RM is struggling and posties are getting hammered.


As for the comment on earlier starts, I have no idea why we start at 6 - A lot of our mail is in the office before 5.

I would ignore Postcomm and do the business properly. If they fine us, I would use Royal Mail bully boys lawyers and take them to courts. Then they will be struggling to fight back.

how about installing a bit of pride into the job, where good work is rewarded and incompetence is punished (not vice versa) a good postman who puts the work in should be made a manager, who will then be allowed to manage and not be hated. eventually all line managers would be ex hard working postmen who have the respect of the staff and respect the staff he or she directs. Its this instead of any old failing postman who couldnt do his job to a decent standard becomming a manager and causing more problems as he goes up the ladder.

I would totally scrap or re-jig rms attendance procedures .
As they are now they punish the honest and encourage the dishonest.
Say i have a single day off when ill - then rush back to work next day before im properly better.
i do that three times spread over a few months im on a stage warning.
somebody who takes a whole week off three times is treated the same.
3 days is = to 15 days
i would scrap "back to work" talks for single days off!
stage 1 only to kick in after 5 absences or 20 days .
rm would probably make a saving as most workers take a whole week off sick
under the current system that treats any length of absence the same.

1. Customers mail delievered between 7am-1pm.

2. Collection from letterboxes, post offices and companies collected all before 6.30pm.

3. Bring back second deliveries.

4. On larger walks employ 2 full time posties or one full time and one part-time.

5. Money should not be wasted on Geo-route and such instruments waste of time and money, different posties have different capabilties (e.g. age, disabilties, etc).

6. Recycle labels (card and paper cost money )some managers do not realise this.

7. Restructure management and administration staff what do some of them do, this is what is costing RM alot of money? They should be paid according to any qualifications (like they do in most city council jobs). Too many managers operational, administration, etc on high pay scales and they are not worth the money, this is crippling RM financially this needs looking at.

what id like is transparency regarding georoute.
if geo-route says my round is 3.5 hours then i have a right to know how many miles it has calculated.
this is a figure that will be easily available as it the main variable along with drops .

1.locate your round on the map
2.click record,
3.double click to plant flag at start.
4.click points along your walk and watch total add!
