Absorbtion at all costs.....

There must be alot riding on this whole absorbtion excercise eh? It seems to me that it WILL happen at all costs. there were times in the past that, if it was heavy they would call of the absorbtion and get it covered on docket. But recently absorbtion has happened whatever the weather, and it doesnt matter at what cost.

:cfo Packets for the absorbtion walks are being left for days on end because no one can be botherd to cover them.

:cfo people are being taken off of the ips to throw off the absorbtion walks leaving us thin on the ground and struggling to get the mail up and making us get out on deliverys later.

Its so contradictory. They will do whatever they can to get the absorbtion done and more hours in the bank. Today it went tits up and the managers were running around like headless chickens because they had lots of absorbtion to cover. HAHA, maybe earn some of that bonus we have worked so hard to create.

When it's really busy our collapsing is cancelled and the walks are covered on OT instead - for now at least.

In our office and it may happen in other offices, we are told if we can't complete our own rounds in time, rather than drop the absortion bit, we've to leave a bit of our own duty and take the absorbtion bit? Maybe i'm a bit daft but i can't see the sense in this, the managers? then have to try and get the bits of the walks been left behind covered, so if they do manage that, instead of doing 1 area i.e the absorbtion bit, they are running about all over town to cover streets that have been left behind.
Time and motion i guess is not their strong point.
by the way this has been pointed out to them, but still they insist on doing it?

The only possible reason I can see behind doing it that way is to get away from the 'stress' of walking 'round with a mug of tea for a bit longer

one of the repurcussions of flexibility and absorbtion is that inour office of 100 people +is that managers have deicded that there is no indoor work for rehab duties which has resulted in two staff members having to accept ill health retirement(although one is appealing).this has happened even though throughout summer mangers have constantly been prepping and delivering a few duties on a regular basis.the cwu rep hasnt helped by not sticking in a disagreemnet which was the green light for mangement to do more.this has meant savings have been made at the loss of two fulltimers at minimum cost to royal mail as the ill health package is shocking.

Our absorbtion ran for 13 weeks, Mon - Sat and its finished now.

Unless someone goes sick and the gaffer cant cover it on a light day, which hasnt happened yet.

See these people that come in early think that they will get finished early is long gone. Job and finish is the end, but people still believe its still here.

It's not a case of i can't be bothered, i think it all lies down to the dom to take care of running the office, and it seems your office has ran past its efficiency. What you need is more staff to take control of other work which is not happening across the board, because of these cut costing strategies.

This should not be the case of do this do that, but sadly its happening every where. You should know what your plan of action is when you set foot in the door, instead of getting thrown about the place. I think you need to speak to your union rep about this, and don't let the dom beat you down, stand up or be seated.

Absorbtion in our office has ceased ever since the enforcement of th EA on April 13th. Instead any "failed" duties are covered on o/t, or failing that the indoor PHG's (Caller's, Special Delivery Locker and Balance Of Staff) are sent out with them.
If there are more than they can cover, managers are then sent out (with the first class only mind!) Even then there sometimes too many to cover! In that case the duty is left in the frame! There are areas that don't get any mail for upto 3 or 4 days, if a colleague is sick, as the managers prioritise certain duties! Mind you there are now times where you come back off your rest day to find none of your delivery was taken out! The packets are then stacked so high, you can't see the frame!

Also on the subject of absorbtion, we have 5 or six managers in our office, 3 of them are prepping walks all morning (one of the managers getting in as early as 4am to prep 2 absorbtion walks)

surely this just highlights the fact that if managers have the time to throw off walks for absorbtion it they musnt have nothing else to do all morning. lets cut some managers dutys instead of the hard working posties.
