Is my heart in it anymore?

Post by geoffxxuk »

I've been working as a postie at Nottingham City Delivery Office for 3 weeks now. There is so many problems within our department it's unbelievable. They have been putting me out at late times, prime example being today at 12:00pm when I'm only contracted until 2? They must think I'm superman or something. Like I'm gonna wizz around and finish within two hours when its a 4 hour delivery tops. I have been claiming over time just recently but whether they will give it me or not I don't know. They tend to be sneaky and try and get away with it even though it's my own time I'm wasting. I could be doing something better once I do until my time. With them putting me out at ridiculous times I panic whether I will actually complete my delivery. And people want their mail early also. So I'm at cross roads really. With them doing this to me it's making me depressed and thinking I'm a useless postie. So where do I go from here? Do I just tell them I'm struggling and find a way to sort this or is there another option? I've also heard by rights they are meant to put you on a walk for 6 weeks tops so that you can get settle in and know what you are doing but they seem to draft us on different walks each week. I'm assuming this isn't right either? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks all

Work to your time, they'll get the message.
Run, rabbit run. Dig that hole, forget the sun.
And when at last the work is done. Don't sit down, it's time to dig another one

Work to your CONTRACTED hours. Then cut off.

They'll soon get the message. Once they realise you are working to your time, speak to your DOM about your issues, at least you'll have a bit of leverage! Good luck. And dont worry about it too much!

Thanks for all the advice people I appreciate it. I'll be sure to absorb this information and go the necessary people from now on to sort my problems.

There is another thing, I have been doing different walks for each day. Is this natural?

It sounds like you've been dumped in at the deep end and you need some help. Try your union rep (join the union if you haven't already, it costs pennies and if your rep is any good, he'll sort these issues for you). Your Work-Place Coach should also be able to help. It may feel like you are on your own in this, but help is available, you just need someone to show you the ropes and how to cope with life in RM and in my opinion your union rep should be just the person.
It's going to get worse, Autumn Pressure starts in a few weeks so you need this sorted sooner rather than later.

There is some good news though - it does get easier, plus there are only a finite amount of walks so you'll know them all soon and won't get that panicky feeling when you haven't got a clue where you're going!

If i done this it would be very awkwurd and im sure they woudl find a way of geting rid of me .! :hmmmm

I like the challenge of one day finishing on time...

but its just not going to happen?

i dont want to have to claim overtime every day jsut make this walk a 5 hour walk!

frustrating !
Yes, I know what you mean but trust me (and I am not saying this about you), many new starters start hiding mail because they can't cope with the workloads (especially with these crappy contracts). Tell them you are struggling and you are unable to complete in the time given. If you have approached a manager, and can prove it, you at least have shown a problem exists.

Managers are paid bonuses and a higher wage because they are employed to sort this sort of crap out, make them earn their money!

REMEMBER! - HIGH WORKLOAD THAT TAKES YOU PAST YOUR TIME IS THEIR PROBLEM, NOT YOURS!

First thing i,d like 2 say is WALKS ARE SURPOSED TO BE 3 AND A HALF HOURS LONG, not 4/5 hours. :confused you have already done the walk so you know its 2 long, so ask 4 a ruling from your DIM saying you would like 2 finish on your finishing time, and do not want 2 work past your time. he will tell you 2 take it all, but say that a ruling you know, is unexceptable knowing that will take you past your time....so ask 4 another...if you do the job properly, dont start throwing in early...take your break....weigh your bags...do a row of your door 2 door ......dont use your car....ETC...AND JUST DO YOUR JOB HOW IT SHOULD BE DONE..the cant treat you like crap and bully you into thing, dims think are right .....get your rep onto it...

Considering this is a communication industry, primarily concerned with letters, I find it strange that members do not write to their DOM with their concerns, problems and a request for a personal interview and send a copy to the unit rep and keep a copy. Once in writing he cannot legitimately turn down the request and should things go t*ts up and he hasn't done anything about it ...........................hey presto.
