tax rebate?

has anyone used the company that runs an ad in THE VOICE(CWU mag),that checks your tax code to see if you are owed a rebate from the IR?I applied last week and was told i may be owed,but not how much.I know they take 40p of every £1 you get,but 60% of anything is better than nowt?Anyone got anything out of this?Cheers !

Its not difficult to ring or turn up at the local tax office and ask them about tax rebates is it and your tax code is on your pay slip, so all you need is your NI number and tax code, I reckon thats all that 'firm' will ask you for anyway, why give them your money when you can do it yourself

There's no need, if you have the time to get to the Tax Office, while it's open. If you go in there, with your details, they'll do the same thing for free.

Just walk in, tell whoever's on the Desk, what you're there for. He/she will pass on the message, ask you to take a number (sorry, you can end up waiting a while). And then you go to a Cubicle, where they will go through everything with you. I know it sounds daft, that the Inland Revenue, would help you get a rebate. But it's in their Job Description (my Parents used to work there!).

Companies like the one you're asking about. Are there, for people who can't get to the Tax Office, while it's open. And/or don't have the time, to wait around in the waiting room. That's what you're paying for: The convenience.

As for whether they're any good. Sadly, I don't know.

hi yes a few in my office have used it i got £270 another guy got £896 and a few waiting for answer mine took 10weeks to come the guy who got £896 got his after 12weeks, 40p in the pound seems a lot but they do all the legwork for you and know what you can claim for, i say go for it.

I agree with stormproof. I did it over the phone a number of years ago and got £360.I didn' have to pay a hefty commission of £144.

It may be worthwhile phoning the tax office and if you get no joy then apply with one of these companies, after all 40% of nothing is nothing but 60% of what you couldn't get yourself is still 60%

dont bother with the companys charging u, with ure own payslips or end of year p60 i think it is theirs a simple online calcualator to tell u whether u are entitled to anything, if u are then u have to ring the tax office who will send u an application form and request evidence ie p60 payslips etc, this can be photocopies as it will - or should match their records! takes about 2-3 months usually.

Thanks tt, I'll dig out my P60 and wage slips tomorrow and have a go at that.
Could do with a tax rebate as we're on strike again in london tomorrow.
