CWU v RM v THE PUBLIC

Post by somerset »

Sorry but i am getting fed up with customers saying to me " striking again for more money " I think the CWU need to do a better press feed and write what it is actually about. The way i see it is if we don't get the public on our side, they will say we our a load of militants ? Lucky to have a job etc etc.

You will never get the public on side, as all they want is their mail delivering. The postal service has been taken for granted for years now.

Got to disagree mate, all my customers once i explain what our concerns are regarding the future of RM, are 100% behind us.
Now i'm not naive enough to think everone is of the same mind, but up until today i have to say the public are very supportive.
Of course this may change if an urgent letter fails to arrive on time.

But shouldn't we let them know that it affects them too. Because of all whats happening their service is getting worse.

Time to ignore RM and the public and threaten sustained IA over Christmas pressure period.

It won't happen, we would loose too much public support striking around Christmas, if the dispute isn't settled you will see the CWU suspend all action during christmas pressure.

CWU should threaten IA over christmas...it doesnt mean they will have to do it.

Just the threat will bring Adam to the table.

Lets face it the general public are well....morons.
They whole culture of news worthyness is all about how much some other bugger gets paid. Thats why whenever some set of workers are on strike all the papers etc come out with is aload of shite about how the `average` worker is on £500 a week for doing feck all, be it ,Firemen,Binmen, the guy who picks dog s**t up in the park etc, they like me have no knowledge of what exactly the job entails, but think because some rag points out that they earn shock horror more than minimum wage that they can pass comment, meanwhile they bleat on about how the employer is so reasonable and really looks after their workforce.

I was once very public service minded, all that ended when Late On and his boy blunder Crozier decided it would be good to get rid of the 2nd delivery and all the sub Post Offices and yet joe public bar the odd resistance from a few hardy souls didn`t give a toss. :so there

Now when somebody ask me why I`m doing one side of a street and yet they don`t get there mail until 2.30pm across the street,I just give them the phone number of our local DOMWIT and tell them to get him to explain,he afterall is such a reasonable employer.
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

but thats exactly the point of the thread.
Once YOU explain it the customers are on side. The CWU dont do us any favours by not getting its point across on the news, every time I see any coverage on the news its some piece about a company being run from home which is going to be inconvenienced for a few days.
Theres nothing about how the RM want to continue to deliver mail later and later - in fact us posties get the blame for it. You`ll hear comments like "we get the post later and later to the lazy postmen and now they want to strike" - thats how uninformed the public at large are when its RM that is 100% to blame for later deliveries.

I dont really agree with the fact that the general public are morons. Theyre being bombarded with RM led propaganda on all the news sources, its hardly surprising that theyre going to take RMs "side" I dont expect the general public to dig deeper into this issue once theyve heard what they hear on the news being presented as fact.
the CWU needs to go on a PR drive and get the public behind us, if they knew the TRUTH we`d see much more support from them.

:Applause :Applause :Applause Exactly my point when i started this thread. CWU don't have to keep sending us the reasons, we already know them. Get the public on our side now. I can't stand there everyday trying to explain to them what it is all about.

There is a certain apathy from the public. They don't want to get involved, Daily Mail have your say posters excepted, unless it affects them directly.
War on terror, "oh isn't it terrible, another serviceman killed", do they really care about the reasons, no.
Car plants closing down, "Oh isn't it terrible, another 1000 people unemployed", do they really care, no.
Price of petrol goes up, "Oh isn't it terrible, I'm going to walk everywhere from now on" Do they, no.
Postman goes on strike, "Oh the lazy b******s are on strike again, hope my gas bill gets stuck in the backlog" Do they really care, no.
The public like to moan and complain about everything, it is our British way of life. It was different back in the 1970's when the unions were strong and the majority of the working public were in Trade Unions, but times have changed, Trade Union membership has fallen dramatically and with it the sympathy that fellow workers felt for each other. Now it is every man for himself, which in my opinion is very sad. There are still some of us whose own values match those of the Trade Union Movement, but we are now in a minority.
Is there any real point in trying to convince the public of the righteousness of our fight, when they will allow themselves to be convinced otherwise the next time they watch the news or read the paper?
In short, our fight is with RM, the public are caught in the middle. Public opinion won't change RM, but the promise of a week long strike just before Christmas will.

The one thing that perhaps puts our fight on a different level to the other disputes that have been mentioned, is the fact
that pretty well everyone in the british isles is going to be personally affected by the ruination of the RM by the powers that be.
That is why i feel the CWU is missing a trick by not getting our message out to the public. Let them know that once their service goes
it is never coming back. As posties we know that the service we provide is vital to millions, not just the delivery of letters, but the social
aspect of the job. :lfo :cfo :mfo

I had to stand by and watch with several members of the public last week whilst an idiot in my office shouted across the car-park how he was 'going out on the lash tonight cause he had a day off(strike) the next day and cheering loudly. He then walked towards the waiting customers telling all in sundrae that he wasnt bothered about losing the money it was a day off. Fools like that do more damage then the union could ever repair.
