Hi Viz vests

In our office there is now an insistence that hi viz vests are worn by all on delivery, no problem with that except they are so hot. Now that summer might be on it's way anyone got any tips on keeping cool while wearing NYLON hi viz vests. Is there such a thing as a cotton hi viz. I did think of putting holes in one to let some of the hot air out.

We're meant to wear them as well, for the last 3 years. Not many of us do (too lazy, stubborn or in some cases to uncomfortable). Do as I do, and don't zip it up. I got stopped by IB on delivery and he noted that I was wearing my hi-vis. In my area it is meant to be compulsory.
IMO, too many people are using any excuse they can think off, not to wear them. It is RM policy, agreed with H&S (I am led to believe). Trust me, if you fall down a flight of stairs because of the Magnum boots, you'd better be wearing a hi-vis vest or you won't have a leg to stand on. (No pun intended)

Hardly of us wear them in our office, every now and then they have a bit of a purge. Have your DOMS and Lineo's got their new hi-vis with their job title on them yet?

Someone at my office threatened to do that to a manager, for the same reason

Why can't RM do a bulk purchase of these items, so we only have to wear ONE layer of clothes, yet still comply with their obsessional 'hi-viz' requirement ? Those nylon hi-viz vests just trap your body heat, whereas these Polo shirts could be made in a breathable fabric, surely ?

The other advantage is that they are future-proof, already being in TNT's corporate colour, thus smoothing the Mandelson-led transition from public ownership to private !!!!!!

Postman, surely you know by now that RM Management and logical thinking are two separate entities ?
I work indoors and drive a fork-lift truck, but was told I still have to wear a hi-viz vest when driving it.
As I said to the manager at the time
'If one of my colleagues fails to spot a bloody great truck - that's painted bright yellow - coming towards him, do you really think making me wear a hi-viz vest is going to make the difference between him seeing the truck and not seeing it ?'

He still insisted I must wear it

I wear mine but I'm in the minority in my office, if it's an agreed H&S issue then I can't see the problem (as someone said, just leave it unzipped).

Old ground that has reasonably been discussed by forum members in H&S forum. All for free speech brother POSTMAN and stimulating debate on RMC, you may find many differing views on the wearing of hi-viz whilst out on delivery and in part the answer to the question you have posed. Some love them and feel safer by wearing them some don't A FACT OF LIFE.

Are we out of step with everyone else ?

The HI VIS will fall to peices before you can put holes in it trust me they are sh*te.

Are we out of step with everyone else ?

As it is recognised in your office that only drivers have to wear them you should also note the following:

Because both Royal Mail and the Union agree that the matter of Cycle safety is a serious issue, following a three months introductory period, from 1 October 2003, wearing the high visibility clothing will become compulsory. Failure to wear hi-visibility clothing may be enforced in the same as Cycle Helmets.

That appears to cover drivers and cyclists. There is now the issue of outdoor delivery officers on foot who don't drive a van and don't use a bicycle. Many on the forum have expressed their view that the hi-viz issue only applies to cyclists if you read the past postings. For my part whether in a van, on a bicycle or on foot or pushing a HCT or golf trolley, I take as a CWU health and safety rep the wearing of hi-viz seriously like many do. And for my own protection wear my hi-viz at all times as is my choice.

we all have to wear them in our office, apparantly it is rm policy that everyone wears them.

my view is that if a driver cant see me pushing a great big red trolley he shouldn`t be on the road anyway and if I am it whilst on a path I cant see how a hi-viz jacket will save me.
