WTF do I do?

Post by smokerjim »

Right, got a call from a lineo today about a change of duty ( at present I am a reserve ). Start at 10 am, tie up and deliver a specific duty ( 3.5 hrs with .5 total travelling time to & from ), meal relief, then go out and deliver packets ( thereby shrink SA collections from 4hrs to 3.25hrs ) to the end of my seven contracted hrs per day ( or stay on for an hrs docket ). I ummed and ahhed on the phone and asked for a 40hr contract to replace my current 35hrs, then asked if I could get back to him, and he said yeah and remember if you need OT, you can work your day off ( fixed Saturdays ), but he was doing me a favour by asking me, cos as a reserve, he could just put me on the duty and be done with it ( yeah, right, does my head button up at the back? Bloody chancer ) but I'd have to let him know as soon as.

Belled my rep ( his day off - must be a coincidence ), gave him the scoop, said I was interested, but said I didn't want to lose my SA collections ( I do one a week, and I'm usually one of the first asked if they need cover, even though I only know two ), and while I don't mind working my day off sometimes, I don't want to feel compelled to work six days just to make up my money every week. He said I should try asking for a written duty description ( cos it's happened before that a duty has changed out of recognition a few weeks after it has commenced ), and that the way the timings would work out, if I did do 7 hrs, not many packets would get delivered , on top of which I don't want to be doing OT cos my duty time is not long enough, only to get pressure and harrassment to stop booking OT! When I got back, the Linoe was gone ( surprise, surprise  ), but the DIM Assist and late shift lineo was there and both said, I'd never get 40hrs ( tell me about it, but I'm still going to ask for it, up to my dying breath ), nor would I get the duty description - I didn't push too much, cos as far as I'm concerned I'm dealing first with the lineo that phoned me, and after that the DOM.

What would you do in my position - on the positive side, I'd have a fixed duty, customers I could call my own again ( when I started I spent 18 months on one duty ), and I'd have every Saturday off ( a nice little sweetner, admittedly ). However, I'd be complicit in reducing the OT of my colleagues ( it's going to happen soon whatever I decide ), and financially, I'd be no better off, maybe even worse ( although I could volunteer for OT by starting a few hrs before my duty time ), I'm not likely to get the 40hrs ( which means I'll be broke after everytime I take A/L as per ). So, comments please, I don't know whether to accept, but I do know i want to spend some more time talking to my rep about this. Cheers.

So would I, but I would need to do packets on a Saturday just to maintain my current wages ( I'd be losing my SA collections during the week ) and as the planned savings are still 50 hrs a week short, there's nothing to stop them changing that set up later in the year - I could very easily find myself stuck on 35 hrs with little option for OT. Plus I would be the office bitch - they might say I only do one fixed duty, but how long will that last when they are in a jam? What happens if there are cut offs? I would have about 2 - 2.5hrs of duty time beyond the finish time of colleague - would a screw say "I can't get Jim to do it, he's already been trampling round the streets for 4 hrs including transit time - I'd best find myself a pouch and take it out myself."?

Or do you think they might say "B*ll*cks I'm not going out, it's hosing it down and this is why I jacked in the blueshirt ( and my soul ) - f*ck it Jim can do it & if he gives me any sh*te about 3.5hrs maximum delivery, I'll bully & threaten him with a coding, till he does take it out.....now, are there any Rich Tea biscuits for me to dunk in my brew?"

Or am I a twisted, bitter, cynic? :hmmmm

Right, I think I have made my mind up - Monday is the unit AGM with all the unit reps and a branch official, I will see if I can button hole them and get their advice ( although I think it will be, "....you'll lose most of your OT opportunities, and what you have available to you, will be reduced over the weeks & months of this year's scrabble for savings..." and then I'll tell the screw to poke his new duty up his arris - and if he dumps me on it anyway ( as I am a reserve ), I'll throw a grievence in his direction.
