PDA'S well haveing used these for a few week's now it is now apparent that royalmail has a new horizon's project on it's hand's (look's good on paper but crap in practice) these device's are CRAP they freeze up like siberia and take to long too use as the old pen and paper method!. ps it look's real professional pleading with the customer on a cold morning saying it is not working just hang on a minute after five minutes i said FU*K IT!.

The one I'm using won't keep it's charge (and the in van charger doesn't work :d'oh! ) usually by the end of the delivery it's sitting around 40% and has been getting lower and lower :mad .

To paraphrase Jeremy Clarkson - my PDA's had more breakdowns than Sienna Miller (please feel free to input your own person  ).

The simple truth is that after only a few weeks the PDA's are showing a build fragility ie. screen scratches and a constant need to reboot the system (as long as you can remember all the codes you need  ), they are not designed for what we do but for packet delivery men who work out of a van.

I used a PDA for the first time this morning, luckily I only had to use the Sat Nav option to find a place out in the sticks for a 9am Special. Must admit the Sat Nav worked well, only problem was my van rattles so much I could'nt hear the voice navigation.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets

On Saturday morning, our office still had 40+ unconfirmed items from Friday because some PDA's did not transmit confirmation at the time of delivery. Yet again RM take one step forward and two steps back.  We are told the reason for the introduction of PDA's is to keep up with our rivals, what a pity drivers from other firms were not asked for their views. RM could have saved millions.

And the same here in our office took it out the next morning (PDA) and it just frozen up could not use it for anything but a doorstop or a paperweight!. Makes you all wonder how many unconfirmed item's we acctually delivered on time or even if we did deliver them and were not recived by royalmails server!.

Maybe its a deliberate tactic. Maybe paper was too reliable.

That is royalmail problem and not our's as had royalmail involved the union in the introduction of new equipment and had term's of reference maybe they could take disciplinary procedure's!. But no agreement has been concluded at this time.

Hopefully someone will be able to clarify something for me, I work in the locker at present, as I have done on and off for several years, I haven't had any formal training on the PDAs but having used them for a few months I am fairly proficient in their use.
My query is:

A SD item is shown as received and allocated on the old T&T system to a specific duty, the duty holder doesn't take out EPOD cards and relies on the PDA for confirmation of delivery/non delivery of the item, which is supposed then to be uploaded instantaneously. That should then be removed from the identifier status for that particular duty because at 1400 hours the T&T system is going to be closed down and an item that hasn't been delivered is going to be shown as delivered under the current procedure. As far as I am aware the PDA and T&T system are supposed to be integrated but I see trouble ahead. Anyone any info to clarify?

Oh dear, and we're just being trained up for them now, got the charger in the van. I'll have to make sure I keep some of the paper forms in the van :)

Good question dvb, We are doing the exact same thing as in your office except at 1pm we are blasting every special out on delivery as confirmed using the T&T system. The next morning we then allocate any specials brought back the day before & then bring them back in 5 minutes later as undelivered. The trace for an undelivered special will look like 3/11 at 10.55 am undelivered. 3/11 at 13.15 pm as delivered. 4/11 at 6.35 am out on another delivery. 4/11 at 6.40 am undelivered. Very professional
The time has come to stop turning the other cheek, time to stop shaking our heads in bitter dismay, time to stop mumbling our angry words.
The time has come for union.
