Rules on Lapsing ?

If you get asked to single or double lapse and are expected to do it before your round BUT then fail your round can you refuse to do the lapsing in future (only if you don’t expect to complete)? I get a bit confused with the lapsing side of things. At our office we lapse a full time round.

Any advice.

To expand on what Clash says: If the DOM asks you to take out a row of a lapsed duty and deliver it before your regular round agree.

Then simply explain that you haven't got enough time (within your contracted hours) to do both the lapsing and your entire duty. What part of your duty does he want you to leave behind?

It's the DOMs decision but he can't have his cake and eat it. Hope that helps.

We are told that lapsing work is no longer lapsing as such, but part of our normal workload......apart from the fact that we aren't allowed to stream or leave this mail in, we can only stream our normal deliveries. This is because most deliveries in my office are far to big and the idea that the lapsing was to fill in spare time we had due to mail/packet levels falling was patently nonsense. This is no Summer only thing either, they were making us do this during Christmas pressure. Just another ruse to halt recruitment and bully people not wanting an argument every day.

You have what we have it is called absorption it's not Lapsing because we get that aswell as our obsorption.we were told obsorption would be the end of Lapsing but we still get Lapsing on top of the absorption....its not as confusing as it sounds in lamens terms it's getting shafted but another word for it is absorption...52 weeks a year with Lapsing also 52 weeks a year...

If you got time, take it. If not don’t, leave it in the office simple as that

Lapsing has no science behind it, once it was planned to be operational in summer due to the lower traffic volumes, now if there is two 'spot' sick jobs to cover they won't call anybody out on overtime as cover, they'll carve it up as 'lapsing' regardless of how busy it is. Take that lapsing as priority, if you feel you can't manage your own delivery leave your non tracked parcels or bring your excess back. Hey presto the jobs are covered at no cost. If anyone ever says anything about mail being left in we'll blame covid.

Ask how many extra days leave they are freeing as that was part of the lapsing agreement

Still so many in our office coming in an hour to hour and half early which gives to managers the idea that everyone should take lapsing, i come in on time and when lapsing is left on my frame I hand it back. We do not stand a chance with people still coming in early, prepping their own walks and still coming back early. Managers turn a blind eye and when I query it the answer is if they have done their walk and lapsing then they can go home early.

More fool them. If you come back early in our office you get sent back out with the left over lapsing. Then they sign out at the same time as the guys who came in on time and didn’t have time for lapsing. Some have worked there 20 odd years and still haven’t figured it out

It's that old argument of, "I come in an hour early .... I finish an hour early .... it's the same as starting on time". And IF you're getting paid for it, and doing any indoor prep you're required to do, I can't see the problem. We all know RM keep trying to hammer square pegs into round holes, and a little bit of flexibility often pays big dividends when you're trying to beat the rush hour to work, or the school run when you're driving out to your Duty.

The problems, as mentioned, start when you're not getting paid for it. You create a False Picture of just how long it really takes to deliver your Duty. Then your Cover gets a bollocking because they can't get around in time. And worst still come next Revision you get another hours work put onto your Duty because they think you haven't got enough work (although perhaps that's you're own fault)!

I'd suggest that unless you've got an agreement with you're DOM that you're going to be paid for coming in early I'd stick to my Normal start time.

No matter what your DOM is telling you, streaming is absolutely not allowed.
