Full time work for part time pay

Post by BuddyElf »

Our office has recently started asking a number of part timers to come in early and prep up walks to cover for a full timer, with starting times being varied, depending upon the days traffic. That means that they are regularly coming in between 15 to 45 minutes later than full timers, who are doing the very same job. In effect the part timers are regularly being paid less than someone else doing the same job. This does not feel fair and I would imagine that full timers were asked to do the same for less there would be an outcry. I have spoken to a number of my PT colleagues who are also unhappy with this. I approached my line manager who agreed but did nothing. Before I approach my depot manager I wanted to sense check this. Is anyone else experiencing anything similar?

I'd say 90% of our P/Ts come in at the same time as the F/Ts, and get the "first 10 hours" rate for the mornings they come in. Full time work for full time hours .. until we are off sick or on annual leave, in which case we get screwed over by the weird convoluted "deal" (even those that are 5 years into the job don't understand the way holiday pay is calculated and we all seem to get the bare minimum despite doing overtime every week)

Thanks for that, feels right somethings not right here. Also PT paid less for DTD supplement, whilst we are doing same prep.
My contract is for 30 hours but do 34/35 each week for same job as full timer. Been going on for a month now.

I`ve been doing that this week, but claiming the extra early hours as overtime. Prepping two frames, then get called away to sort the misc. boxed mail into sorting frames. As I`m not familiar with what street is on which number walk, it`s taking ages, so I`m late back to completing the mech and D2Ds on my walk frames, and later getting out, consequently, on a 5hr contract, I can`t complete on time, so claim o/t for that too.

No one is paid for D2D, they are paid a Delivery Supplement.

Part timers overtime for the hours to take them from contracted to 37 hours should be paid at SSPR and that includes the Delivery Supplement. That means a part timer doing 37 hours is paid the same as a full timer doing 37 hours.

Delivery supplement is related to contract hrs. 30hr contract will get same delivery supplement if they have a 30 hr week or do 7 hrs overtime, this doesn't change.

Can't work out how to quote a post and reply to it, do I've copied it in above

Untrue. Assuming that your DOM support, lino or DOM himself put the overtime in correctly. As per a post above, if it goes in as SSPR, as it should, you get paid exactly the same as a fulltimer for a 37 hour week

Wrong, you are paid sspr which includes extra for the delivery supplement up to 37 hours

I'm not sure that is possible. When a p/ter does o/t the hours upto 37hours are paid at the same rate. (Basic + delivery supplement) What you might see is the p/t doing loads of o/t that takes them beyond 37hr and into the "first 10 hours".

Agree with the rest about being screwed in sick , holiday pay etc.

Average Holiday pay is currently paid twice a year in lump supplements but everyones getting screwed in this. Still better than not getting it all these years.

I only ever get "first 10 hours" for morning work. Anything in the afternoon is lower rate. I need to go see someone about it if that's wrong, as recently I got 2.75 on "first ten hours" and 9.5 on lower rate

As stated by others, you are wrong.

The Delivery Supplement is related to contracted hours. But when a part timer does overtime they should be paid it at the SSPR rate and that rate INCLUDES the Delivery Supplement at a pro-rata rate up to full time hours. If someone is being paid the 1st 10 hour rate instead of SSPR then it is being processed incorrectly.

How? What are your P/T contracted hours?

Then any OT that takes you up to 37hrs is paid at SSPR rate (which includes the delivery supplement).

After that the OT rate is 1st 10hrs rate (which is the 'lower' rate, as it doesn't include the delivery supplement and is
not RMDCP pensionable pay).

I can't see how your management can say this work is 1st 10hrs, but this is SSPR rate. It just adds up as
you work it.

If p/t'ers don't want the extra hours then all they have to do his refuse to work them? If my DO is anything to go by most p/t'ers are happy to work the extra hours, it's frustrating to be stuck on p/t contracts when there's clearly sufficient work to offer f/t contracts but at the end of the day it's the £'s on your payslip which matter.
