Been a postie for a bit over 6 months now and asked a few posties at my office and no one seems to have an answer to these questions.
What's the stance on taking unpaid leave, specifically for a week at some time in the new year, to do a training course (HGV C+E). With the intention of it being pre-arranged at least a month in advance, if not more than that.
Also, what's the policy on working a secondary job on your days off? In my case would be doing HGV agency work for some extra pocket money until a HGV drivers job opened up at Royal Mail local to me. I know obviously working for a competitor would be a massive no-no but was thinking along the lines of agency work for supermarkets or doing runs with shipping containers.

Was only a couple of weeks back at our office we got told that Royal Mail are looking for people interested in doing HGV training for the company as they realised they have a very ageing work force and so want to train in house. Know we had a couple interested at our work place so why don't you ask your rep about it? Think you apply through the online site if interested

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

As someone else has said, apply for the driver academy.
Also, what hours do you do at the moment? Lots of rules and regs to be followed about working/driving time. You might find you could only do 1 day every other week on the trucks.
